Multiple people have been killed after a single-engine plane crashed in a wooded area at an airport in North Carolina, the US National Park Service says.

The crash occurred at 5pm on Saturday as, according to eyewitnesses, the plane was trying to land at the Wright Brothers National Memorial's First Flight Airport, the park service said in a news release.
