Largest fire in Japan for decades sees 1200 evacuated

The agency said at least 84 homes have been damaged, and over 1200 people evacuated. The fire has subsided in some areas.

About 4600 people remain under government-issued evacuation orders as the fire continues to burn.

A man was found dead on a road and authorities are examining if the death was linked to the fire, the agency said.

The northeastern regions, including Ofunato, have had their driest winter since 1946, when the Japan Meteorological Agency started collecting data.

The fire has also caused power cuts affecting 1150 homes and water cuts in nearly 800 homes, according to data from the prefecture.
