UK cases dip, French hospitalisations rise

London pedestrians — The United Kingdom has reported 38,009 new COVID-19 cases within 24 hours.

Health authorities have registered a dip in COVID-19 cases in the United Kingdom while coronavirus-linked hospitalisations are on the rise in France.

The UK has reported 38,009 new infections, government data showed on Sunday, meaning cases reported between October 25 and October 31 were down by 13.5 per cent compared with the previous seven days.

A further 74 people were reported as having died within 28 days of a positive test for COVID-19, meaning the seven-day total was up by almost 16 per cent from the previous week.

Changes in the number of deaths typically lag those for cases.

French officials said on Sunday the number of people hospitalised because of COVID-19 went up by 48 over the past 24 hours to reach 6572, the highest daily increase since September 6.

Daily new infections stood at 6329, a 26.5 per cent rise from a week ago, and the seven-day moving average of daily new cases reached a five-week high of 5858.

The cumulative total of new cases now stands at 7.17 million.

The number of COVID-19 patients in intensive care rose by seven in 24 hours to 1046 and by 28 over a week.

France also registered 12 new deaths from the epidemic, taking the total to 117,755.
