Norway arrests ship on suspicion of Baltic cable damage

"It is suspected that the ship has been involved in serious damage to a fibre cable in the Baltic Sea between Latvia and Sweden," the police said in a statement.

The Norwegian-owned and flagged vessel, named as Silver Dania, had been sailing from St. Petersburg in the Baltic Sea to Murmansk in the Russian Arctic, police said.

Earlier this week, Swedish authorities seized a ship suspected of damaging a data cable running under the Baltic Sea to Latvia.

The Vezhen - a Maltese-flagged ship - is currently anchored outside the Swedish port of Karlskrona.

Prosecutors said an initial investigation pointed to sabotage. An inquiry has been launched involving Sweden's police, military and coastguard.
