Rain fails to dampen show spirit

Student Maggie Bramley has started her own Speckle Park stud and last week took her 14-month-old heifer to the Numurkah Show with fellow students from Finley High School. Maggie, 16, was wearing a hand-made buckle she won as an encouragement award at the recent Melbourne Show.

The threat of rain didn’t deter many people from turning out to enjoy the Numurkah Show or to compete in the dozens of events.

Light rain fell in the morning but the skies cleared as the day wore on.

Show secretary Jeff Stanyer said he was initially concerned when he saw the weather forecast indicate the 100 per cent chance of rain, but the weather cleared and didn’t get in the way of the show.

“We had excellent entries in the pavilions, with many people remarking on the flower section. The dog show was good and in the equestrian area, (there were) more entries than normal in the harness section.”

The gate takings were down slightly, partly due to the free entry for under 15-year-olds.

The fashions on the farm competition was judged by Moira Shire administrator Suzanna Sheed, who opened the show and awarded prizes to Hank Sanders and Eleanor Baldi.

The bush poetry competition was won by Ellen Morecomb from Kaarimba with a tale about “bin chickens” and second place was Des Guinane.
