The cast and crew at Echuca Moama Theatre Company are ready to take on the challenge of a cult-classic in modern day cinema — Shrek The Musical.
Everybody’s favourite ogre and his motley crew can be seen at Paramount Theatre over two massive weekends from Friday, May 26 to Sunday, May 28 and Friday, June 2 to Sunday, June 4.
Directing such a large production takes a village, or in this case, a triad.
Mark Thomson, Darcy Elliott and Tamara Cadd are EMTC stalwarts and co-directors of Shrek The Musical.
Mark said the show would wow both adults and children.
“There’s a lot of interesting bits in the script — fairytale characters for the kids, humour that adults will understand,” he said.
“The storyline is similar to the first movie, but the music slightly differs. They’re real catchy tunes.”
As for the set designs, it’s more than just a ‘nice boulder’.
“It’s a mixture of projections, sets on stage, amazing costumes, big dance numbers and lots of comedy.”
Shrek The Musical will be the company’s first full performance since COVID-19, and Mark and the team have involved as many people as possible in the production.
“COVID was horrendous, it’s good to be back and getting the performers and community behind it,” he said.
“We’ve had people audition from Bendigo, Shepparton, Kyabram, Echuca-Moama and Rochester.
“People get to do a bit of everything, both song and dance.
“We have great choreographers and separate sequences for only dancers to showcase them doing their thing.”
Shrek The Musical is a big business undertaking and Mark is looking forward to the time that hard work is paid off, crowds are entertained and he can sit back and say, ‘that’ll do, Donkey, that’ll do’.
When tickets go on sale, you better run, run, run as fast as you can because this show is not one to be missed.
