Yarrawonga netball

Wangaratta arrived flying high after a couple of dominant wins in the previous rounds and with the Pigeons and Magpies only separated by a handful of points on the ladder, this game promised to be a tight tussle.

With an experienced side hosting a couple of new faces, the Magpies kept the game well within their grasp through the first half.

A well-oiled defence team and a lightening quick and accurate attacking end providing a match for the Pigeons early.

But with Yarrawonga fielding an almost full-strength side, the Pigeons had the rotations and the answers to match the challenges the Magpies were throwing at them.

Kylie Leslie once again showed her versatility, swinging from defence to attack seamlessly. Annalise Grinter and Hannah Symes combined well to dilute a tall and fast Magpies goal circle.

Laura Ryan was once again steadfast in defence and provided a key link between defence and attack.

Laura Irvine and Tilly Kennedy rotated through the centre with ease, feeding the goal circle with pinpoint accuracy. Bridget Cassar and Sarah Moore’s telepathic combination in the goal circle got the Pigeons off to an accurate start, using their strength and smarts to outwit an equally familiar Magpies defensive goal circle.

Maddy Allan was injected into the game at half time and combined well with Moore to provide a higher rotating Pigeons goal circle to keep the Magpies on their toes.

The Pigeons pulled off a strong 10 goal win to cement the number 2/3 position on the A grade ladder at the halfway point in the 2022 season.

B Grade

Yarrawonga 50 defeated Wangaratta 43.

It was perfect conditions for a great game of netball on Saturday. The B grade girls came across a very young and fast Wangaratta side, who put pressure on early. The great tips and taps from the defenders allowed plenty of opportunities for the attackers to convert and we slowly chipped away to a seven-goal win.

C Grade

Yarrawonga 50 defeated Wangaratta 33.

It was another cold and frosty morning, but it didn’t stop the girls coming out fast and strong.

A quick lead was made, thanks to strong and quick defence, accurate shooting and a patient mid-court. Despite the Maggies efforts, Yarra held a confident lead throughout the game.

This allowed a number of rotations to be made throughout, to further prove the strength of the C Grade side.

A real credit to the team as they adjusted well to all the changed. A great team effort.

Under 17s

Yarrawonga 46 defeated Wangaratta 45.

One point was the difference between these two teams who fought hard all day. A very impressive match by the Pigeons youngest stars who stood up to the challenge.

How many years have you played at YFNC? 5 years in the juniors and this is my first year in under 17s.

What do you love most about netball? I love the competitiveness and pace of the game and the friendships that it creates.

What is the most challenging part of netball? The nerves leading up to the game.

What is your personal goal for the season? To improve each week and to play the best I can whenever I’m on the court.

What are your plans once you finish school? I’m not sure on what I exactly would like to do but I want to work with kids.

Name a sportsperson that inspires your netball? My auntie Kait Cummins because she encourages me to do the best I can and was a superstar for the Yarrawonga Pigeons.
