The Wanderers have played five matches in the preseason, one against Hay, and then against Hay, Swan Hill and Nicholls Points during a three match gala day in Swam Hill.
In the final practice, they met La Trobe University at the weekend.
In the first game against Hay, the Wanderers came up short in a good hit.
The final score read the Deniliquin Wanderers 2 to Hay Rams 6.
In Sunday’s practice against La Trobe at Moama, the game ended in a 1-all draw.
Wanders president Matt Crothers said the Deni side also returned some promising results from the gala day.
Crothers said each of the preseason games has helped the playing group as a whole.
“The gala day was 40-minute games, with 20 minutes in each half.
“We beat Hay 3-1, Swan Hill beat us 3-1 and Nichols Point beat us 3-0.
“That last result showed great stamina from us.
“We played well as everyone had played each game, and to keep them to nil all at half-time was a great result.
“As for the game on the weekend (against La Trobe) we were very unlucky to not win it even though we were 1-0 down at half-time.”
“Their keeper was pulling out some great saves. Our guys weren’t hitting their targets as they normally would, but the run of the play was all our way.
“We just weren’t finding the back of the net.”
Crothers said the preseason was a good test for the Wanderers playing against some of the best sides in the Bendigo Amatuer Soccer League 2 competition,
“La Trobe are very strong.
“The league one side played Moama in the final match of the day and won 9-0.
“We did pretty well playing their league one reserve side.
“We have a few younger guys. But most are returning from last year.
“Masen Brain got the goal against La Trobe.
“Tanaka Maunganidze scored a preseason goal too, and looked even faster than his father Bruce - which is hard to do. So that’s exciting.”
The Wanderers will continue training in preparation for the start of the BASL 2 season. A start state and fixture are yet to be released.
