The average age of the team that took to the green for the weekend’s game against Euroa was comfortably double that of the one which ended the 2023-24 season.
That had no impact on the result, however, successive wins coming on the back of a team that has gone from having four secondary school players to having only one player younger than 60.
New generation bowlers Henry and Charlie Boswood remain club members who are playing in Melbourne, but the club has lost several other young bowlers to other clubs in the region.
With 10 new players in its division one ranks after an exodous of star bowlers, Kyabram is one of only two unbeaten teams.
Octogenarian Chris Preddy had a number of septuagenarians alongside him on Saturday as the youngest player in the team — by a long way — was Greg Shilling’s third Brad McIntosh.
High performing skip Rob George, who is rising-50, is also among the youngest players in the team.
Kyabram has played the bottom two teams in the opening rounds, Mooroopna in round one and Euroa on Saturday, but was a six-shot winner on the back of a big Shilling rink win last weekend.
Shilling combined with Graeme King, Robert Sceney and McIntosh for a 28-14 win as Kyabram won overall 84-78 (13-5), losing two of the other rinks and drawing another.
Mal Williams lost to Ken Sutcliffe, John Hausler stepped into the skipping role in Noel Reddrop’s absence and lost by four, while George tied on his rink.
Kyabram has the chance to continue its winning start to the year when it faces sixth-placed Shepparton Park this weekend, one of four teams who have started the season with a win and a loss.
The only other team that remains unbeaten after two rounds is reigning premier Tallygaroopna, which beat Shepparton Golf by a shot in round one and dominated Shepparton Park with a 26-shot win at the weekend.
