Kyabram will continue to carry the underdog status it has embraced throughout this season into week two of the Goulburn Valley Playing Area’s division one weekend pennant finals.

The Bombers will face-off against top team Tallygaroopna in the weekend’s cut throat preliminary final at Shepparton Golf Bowling Club, a spot in the grand final against Shepparton Golf awaiting the winner.
Tally finished the home and away season with 12 wins and only one defeat, but was beaten by 12 shots in the weekend’s qualifying semi-final.
In the two games between Kyabram and Tally this season the latter has won by 19 shots and 22 shots.
Kyabram only won its place in the finals with a final round win against Tatura-Hill Top and finished with a 7-6 win/loss record.
After winning the first two rounds of this season the Kyabram team, which had an enormous turnover of players in the off season, suffered a series of defeats and questions were asked of its ability to again feature in the February action.
On Saturday those concerns were finally put to rest when it beat Shepparton Park by 24 shots on the back of rink wins from Robert George and Mal Williams.
The team’s most outstanding bowler, and the second ranked skip of season 2024-25, Greg Shilling had to be content with a draw and another champion veteran Noel Reddrop also tied his rink.
In round three this year Kyabram lost by nine shots to Shepparton Park, but turned that result around in round 10 to win by three.
That result was influenced by a 12-shot Greg Shilling win and a 10-shot win by teenager Charlie Boswood - on loan from his metropolitan club.
Boswood, his brother Henry and father Darren, have played in the metropolitan competition with Port Melbourne this season and have not played enough games to qualify for the GV pennant finals series.
Glenn Fields’ win against the number ranked player in the Campaspe Playing Area’s division one weekend pennant competition was in vain on the weekend.

– A thrilling one-shot win for Glenn Fields against the number one seed of the Campaspe Playing Area’s division one weekend pennant competition was not enough to influence the final result of Tongala’s game with Moama Steamers on Saturday.
The Steamers won the preliminary final bout by eight shots, 68-57, with Geoff Beattie taking a six-shot win against Steve Hammond and Rod Werner beating Brad Tinning 23-17.
Fields won his rink 23-22, leading Bill Hatzie, Steve and Barry Tinning to victory, but for the first time this year the Bulls lost overall to the Steamers.
Tongala beat the Steamers by 10 shots in round four, way back in November last year, and then dominated the Moama team 75-40 only a month ago.
The Bulls season is echoed by the standing in the player ladder stakes. Only Brad Tinning, with 10 wins and three defeats, features in the top 10 as number eight.
Connor Trewren and Peter Tinning were the other two outstanding bowlers for Tongala this season, rated as 12th and 14th seeds in the top flight.
– Kyabram has been knocked out of the division two midweek pennant finals after losing to Mooroopna in the elimination semi-final last week.
A three-shot win by the division five weekend pennant team has it facing off against Colbinabbin this weekend for a spot in the grand final.
Kyabram’s midweek division five team repeated that elimination semi-final scoreline (also winning by three shots).
A five shot win by the division seven weekend pennant team has given it direct passage into the grand final on Saturday, March 8.
