While umpiring numbers continue to rebound post-COVID-19 in some regions and grow in others and with the continued development of the game, umpiring associations are keen to welcome new members from all backgrounds to get involved in umpiring.
“Umpiring is more than just a great way to be involved in the game and it’s more than just a great way to keep fit and earn money,” AFL GM regional director of umpiring Sam Wood said.
“It is able to provide opportunities on many different levels, whether that is moving up the ranks to a higher level of umpiring or providing family and friends to spend time together at training and running around on Saturday.”
Of the 187 umpires currently registered to the GVFUA, 67 of them have another family member also umpiring.
This includes 28 different families.
“These relationships extend from father and sons, father and daughters, mother and sons, brothers, brother and sisters to husband and wife,” Wood said.
“These families get to train together and umpire together and provide opportunities to be out on the sporting field that other sports may not provide.”
If you want to get out and umpire with family members, friends or for your own benefit contact the GVFUA.
The AFL-run Community Umpiring Week started on April 26 and ends on May 2.
