The team progresses to the finals after winning the Riverina PSSA Knockout championship, coming out on top in the regional final held in Wagga last week.
Both the TPS boys’ and girls’ teams qualified for the Riverina final after winning their way through earlier rounds of the state-wide knockout competition, both competing against Lake Albert Public School.
The girls’ final was the culmination of six months training for the team, who qualified after the bigger schools of Narrandera and Lavington Public Schools - who they were scheduled to play - both had to forfeit.
TPS principal Darren White said the girls were not overawed by the occasion, and played extremely well.
“It was tied 1-2 at the end of the first innings, but from there TPS took control to take out the game at the end of three completed innings 14-8,” he said.
“The game was played in great spirit and was a thoroughly enjoyable experience for the team of 12 girls, particularly given the previous rounds were forfeited by the other schools.
“This is an enormous achievement for a team that only plays softball at school.
“Thank you to coach Mrs Beth Hatty who gave up her lunch times to work with the girls over the past six months.”
The girls’ side will now play the winner of the NSW Sydney Metro region in the first round of the NSW state finals. A date is yet to be set.
“The boys team played a very experienced opposition who defeated the TPS side in a one sided game,” White said.
“Despite the loss, the boys held their heads high and fought to the end.
“It was also a great experience for the many younger members of the side and this will hold them in good stead for the upcoming years.”
To cap off a great year for TPS softball, seven students were successful in being selected into the Riverina side to compete at the separate boys and girls State PSSA softball carnivals to be held later this term.
These students are Harrison Wilson, Riley Thompson, James White, Chase Dickins, Mia Owen, Claudia Almond and Shayla Hicks.
The boys’ carnival started yesterday and concludes tomorrow. It is being held in Mudgee.
The girls’ carnival will be from September 20 to 22, in Sydney.
“What an amazing experience it will be,” Mr White said.
