Sally Beach and Brad Tinning won through two qualifying rounds and a quarter-final to face title favourites Philip Thorn and Pat Schram in one semi-final.
They beat the highly fancied pair 16-11, but fell at the final hurdle against Geoff Beattie and Colleen Maslen — beaten 13-17 in the final.
Bill Hatzie was the other Tongala pennant bowler involved in Sunday’s finals.
He partnered Olivia Cartwright, the Kyabram star who has been bowling with Moama Bowling Club at the elite regional level in recent seasons, to also win a place in the semi-finals.
They were beaten by Beattie and Maslen 4-23 in the semi-final.
Earlier in the knockout tournament, Beach and Tinning opened the competition with an 18-8 win against Echuca’s Cecil and Joan Moss.
They then won by five shots before narrowly escaping a game with pennant teammates Matthew Liverton and Robyn Tooley.
Liverton and Tooley won their opening round match, 16-13, against Moama’s Brock Keenan and Gracie Retallick, then progressed through round two with a 11-10 win against Echuca’s Steve and Michelle Cunnington.
They lost the quarter-final to their teammates by one shot, 10-11.
Hatzie and Cartwirght had two close calls in the opening rounds, winning 14-13 against Damian and Jenni Hogan, and then 17-16 against Echuca star Ian Page and Kristy Gillingham.
In the quarter-finals, they beat highly decorated veteran Marilyn Stephenson by five shots.
