The clash at Moama Bowling Club broke the Steamers away from what had been a leading three for most of the season, while the Campaspe Playing Area mid-table is tightening up ahead of what is sure to be an enthralling run home.
Tongala secured all three rinks, 16-75 and 0-40, against Moama to keep its position at the top of the ladder and all but knock the Steamers out of the minor premiership race.
Stephen Hammond’s squad ran up the score in their rink, coming out 29-8 winners, while Glenn Fields secured a double-digit margin in his rink, 24-14 over Robert Young.
The remaining rink also swung in the favour of Tongala, Bradley Tinning’s quartet securing the victory by four shots, 22-18.
Current wooden spooner Rich River denied Echuca the chance to move into the top four, forcing a draw on overall shots at Echuca Bowls Club.
Rich River also claimed two of the three rinks in the 9-63 to 7-63 result, earning them the majority of the points.
All three rinks went down to the wire, Rich River’s Keith Hewitt getting up 23-21, while teammate Tim Noar prevailed by the narrowest possible margin 21-20.
Phillip Thorn’s three-shot win for Echuca, 22-19, proved the biggest of the match, and drew the scores level on the overall tally.
Visiting Stanhope Bowls Club, a drawn rink was the only way Rochester was able to score points in the fixture, Stanhope dominating in the other two rinks to win 15-87 to 1-43 and keep leader Tongala in reach.
Les Walles and his squad, featuring Francis Keech (lead), Kevin Burrow (second) and Rob Dennis (third) managed to battle Stanhope skip Ben Fletcher’s quartet to an 18-all standstill, picking up Rochester’s single point for the tie.
Elsewhere, Timothy Hancock was in fine form, skipping a 31-8 Stanhope win, while teammate Gregory Fitzpatrick was also a big winner, getting up 38-17.
Mathoura took a big step towards a possible finals berth, dominating mid-table rivals Deniliquin 16-66 to 0-38.
Dennis McHarry was in fine form for the Cutters leading Ron Parry (lead), Glen McConchie (second), and Peter Holzer (third) to a 27-12 win over Deni’s Peter Chadderton-led line-up.
Peter Pangrazio, 19-12, and Mick Humphreys, 20-14, also skipped wins for Mathoura which drew level on points with its opponent.
A cluttered mid-table sees Mathoura and Deniliquin both on 82 points, with Echuca just behind on 81, all three sides battling for fourth position.
Lower divisions
In division two, Rochester also went down to Stanhope, 14-73 to 2-56, while Deniliquin edged out local rivals Deni RSL 13-64 to 3-60.
Rich River lost two winks but got the win over Echuca 12-62 to 4-53, and Moama defeated Tongala 12-56 to 4-54.
In division three, Lockington was all over Rochester, winning 16-88 to 0-47, while Elmore got the points against Deni RSL 14-57 to 2-46.
Moama Black took all three rinks over Echuca 16-64 to 0-52, while Mathoura got the best of a draw with Rich River, 9-55 to 7-55.
Leader Moama Green dominated Deniliquin 16-83 to 0-42.
Division four saw Echuca prove too strong for Rich River, 16-82 to 0-46, while Stanhope also secured maximum points over Ky Valley View 16-84 to 0-39.
Moama got the win over Tongala, 14-76 to 2-53, and Lockington benefited from a forfeit by Mathoura-Echuca.
In division five, Rochy got the best of Stanhope, 12-42 to 2-37, Elmore scraped by Echuca 12-39 to 2-38, and Lockington was defeated by Deni RSL, 14-54 to 0-25.
Deniliquin got the best of Moama 14-46 to 0-33.
