Under the fierce summer sun, Cobram visited Deniliquin to do battle with the ladder-topping Rhinos in Round 13 of the MVCA.

Following its dusting of Tocumwal last week, Cobram was set to do all it could to restrain any sideways behaviour from the Rhinos in day one of the two-day clash.
Rhinos captain Boddie Arthur took up the willow for Deniliquin after his side won the toss and elected to bat.
It took joint efforts from Tigers veteran Shaun Downie and Eamon Hyde to send Arthur packing with 27 from 79.
But soon the Rhinos went from strength to strength, even with Shaun Downie arriving to dent the armour of the Rhinos by taking three for 84 from 29 overs. And while Downie made a respectable dent in Deniliquin’s batting line-up, it was Jimmy Daniel who left a crater in the form of five for 70 from 22.
But the best efforts from the Tigers couldn’t restrain a rampant Rhino in the form of Brodie Bennett, who concluded his turn with the bat with a massive 124 from 73. It took a combined effort from Jimmy Daniel with the ball and 16-year-old Jaxon Webb to send the Rhino packing for the sheds.
Deniliquin finished its first innings after 80 overs on nine for 282.
Cobram looks set to take up the bat on Saturday, February 8.
Cobram co-coach Lachlan Hyde said while he felt his side bowled well most of the day, some things didn’t go to plan.
“We got a few quick wickets to start off with, with Arthur and French. It was good to see the back of them because they’ve been in good form,” Hyde said.
“But when Bennett and Hogan came in, they created a bit of a struggle.”
Bennett proved his ability, overcoming every plan the Tigers threw at him.
“He batted exceptionally well, and every time he’d hit the ball it seemed to go to the boundary or sail over someone’s head,” Hyde said.
“He’s set a huge task for us next week, which we’re looking forward to meeting.”
Besides the impressive bowling from Downie and Daniel, Hyde highlighted the performance of Chase Hardwidge.
“He didn’t get a wicket, but he bowled hard, and we thought he bowled exceptionally well from that one end,” he said.
It was also a chance for the Webb brothers in Jaxon, 16, and Bodey, 14, to have a chance to bowl against quality A-grade opposition.
“We had quite a young side in general, so it was good for them to get a bit of experience and get a taste of quality A-grade cricket,” Hyde said.
With its target of 282 runs, Cobram looks set to come out fighting this weekend.
“We’ll hopefully get a good start off with our openers, and whoever’s opening with Hugh [Hyde] gets off to a good start,” Hyde said.
Jimmy Daniel and Shaun Downie will be out; Daniel Ellis is set to return, and Hunter Hogan will come up from Cobram’s B-grade.
Lenny Power, who recently made a ton in the Southern Riverina competition on Sunday, February 2, is set to arrive at the top of the order for the Tigers, Hyde said.
“It’s going to be an exciting challenge to see where we’re at as a young group,” he said.
