With some of Deniliquin’s strongest bowlers out and about, the Tigers’ job of chasing 282 appeared anything but easy after an in-form Hugh Hyde was bowled for a duck by Deniliquin’s Matt Taylor.
Taylor (4 for 62) and Brodie Bennett (4 for 46) went on to share the spoils for the Rhinos, taking out the Tigers’ best across the top and bottom of Cobram’s batting order.
Despite his best efforts, Taylor couldn’t prevent an in-form Daniel Ellis from pocketing a tidy 95, joined by co-coach Lachlan Hyde with a half-century at the top of the order.
Rising talent Lenny Power pocketed a neat 23 runs before being sent packing by a double threat in Griegan French off the delivery of Bennett.
But with Bennett and Taylor out for blood, it was over all too quickly for the Tigers, who were all out for 237 in the 66th over.
Cobram co-coach Lachlan Hyde said his side knew it was going to be a challenge to catch Deniliquin’s 282.
“Deni’s got a quality bowling outfit and been good all year,” he said.
“But we definitely gave it our best.
“We obviously just fell short, but we were still quite happy on how the game went.”
Despite the result, Hyde said there were still positives to take out of his team’s performance.
“We didn’t lie down. It was good to see the team dig in to get a pretty decent score. It’s always tough chasing runs in cricket,” Hyde said.
“Being able to consolidate a solid score — we got to 240, and that usually wins games in the Murray Valley.
“Getting experience into our younger players and less experienced players, that was a great opportunity for them.
“And being able to do it without our big guns, I guess.
“I think the club was pretty happy with the way we went. It was a good feeling to know we could get to where we were.”
With second-placed Nathalia this weekend at home, Hyde emphasised his side would be backing itself.
“Anything could happen. We’re going to have to work hard for it,” he said.
“[We’ll] back our abilities and try to start well and put pressure back on the opposition. And continue what we’ve been doing for the last few weeks.
“But also don’t underestimate Nathalia because they’ve been one of the best sides for the last few years.”
