The Thunder handed Tallygaroopna its second loss of the campaign with a tense 54-47 win in a highly-skilled and competitive clash at Dookie United.
As the Kyabram District League celebrated Indigenous Round, the Thunder overcame a sluggish start to chalk up their 10th triumph of the A-grade season.
Hayley Symonds and Gemma O’Sullivan were influential through the midcourt with electric feeds into the ring, while Monica Kelly and Maddison Owen continued to strengthen their combination in goals.
“It was a very tough match. Tally are a strong side and we knew it was going to be on from the first whistle,” United coach Laura Henderson said.
“We were down at the first break, but the girls were able to peg it back and just held control for the rest of the match and I thought they did an excellent job after a tough start.
“We haven’t had one of those strong matches yet and I think it caught us by surprise, but once we got settled we were able to find our rhythm.
“It’s good to play at that level again, the girls know how to play at that (level) and they do it well.”
With her side maintaining its perfect record at the weekend, Henderson highlighted the belief and hunger amongst the playing group to go one better this year.
“I was really happy with the performance. You can tell there is a lot of hunger in the group to make up for last year,” she said.
“And I don’t think we are quite at our full potential yet either, there’s still some room for improvement.”
Meanwhile, Shepparton East sits atop of the table following its 47-27 win, Merrigum pumped Longwood 57-17 and Nagambie held on for a gritty 10-goal win over Avenel.
Lancaster was too strong for Rushworth (53-24) and Girgarre impressed with its 64-31 triumph over Undera.
On Sunday, Stanhope bounced back from last week’s loss with a superb 61-42 blitz of Violet Town.
