The fourth edition of The Carlton Draft’s retired star assignment program has some of the game’s top names who have recently hung their boots up making one-off appearances at successful clubs across the country.
This year, it truly will take a nationwide approach, as Fremantle all-time leading goal-kicker Matthew Pavlich joins the crew with plans to grace a West Australian grassroots club later in the year.
Closer to home 2024 AFL retiree and Finley native Tom Hawkins is another confirmed to pull the long socks back on for one successful applicant in the coming season.
Hawkins isn’t waiting long to turn up at local level following a 19-season, 359-game AFL career at Kardinia Park which saw him walk away with Geelong’s all-time games record and four premierships, a resume few can match.
The 36-year-old key forward was already known to be returning to familiar confines — in familiar Cats colours — to make a one-off appearance for Finley this season of Murray Football League.
However, now another club will receive its chance to call “Tomahawk” theirs for a day as the program expands in 2025, again featuring Kyabram junior and former Richmond and GWS star Brett Deledio among its ranks.
In a statement on the Carlton Draft website, Hawkins thanked chief organiser Dylan Buckley and 2024 participant turned commissoner Jonathan Brown for the opportunity.
“Everyone knows my passion for local footy, so when I got the call from Dyl and Browny to join this year’s Carlton Draft, it was an easy decision,” Hawkins said.
“I’ve loved seeing some of my great mates and old rivals getting back on the park in the last few years – the crowds have been unbelievable.
“They say you’re a long time retired and after only a few months, I can understand why.
“I still feel like I’ve got a lot to offer and I’m excited to see where I’m drafted, then get out there and play my best footy.
“I’m sure it will be a special day.”
March 18 is the closing date for club applications towards Carlton Draft players, with late April tentatively scheduled as the time for winners to be selected before eligible games start from May onwards.
