A Friday night junior tennis competition could be on the cards for next season, with Shepparton Junior Tennis Association seeking interest in the concept.
With many tennis players facing the dilemma of choosing one sport or the other due to clashing schedules during summer, the association decided to put the call out for a Division B Friday night competition.
Association president Geoff Akers said it was seeking interest after hearing the calls to set up a Friday night competition.
“A number of junior tennis players have other sports Saturday mornings and a Friday night competition allows them to continue with their tennis,” Akers said.
“The tennis association had 12 players last season that played cricket Friday night and tennis Saturday morning.
“As players change age categories and move to an under-14 cricket competition that is played on a Saturday morning, the SJTA is looking to ensure those children have the opportunity to continue pursuing both sports.”
Akers said the Saturday morning competition would continue to operate as it had in the past, with clubs called on to submit teams by September 6.
“We hope by offering up a Friday night competition, players will not have to give up a sport and they will be able to continue with both,” Akers said.
Anyone interested in playing junior tennis on Friday night or Saturday morning are encouraged to contact their tennis club.
