The Shepparton Junior Tennis Association, imminently due to close its season out with league finals, has grand designs on creating a participation boom next time the courts are calling out.
The league will be running a come and try day for any and all interested juniors to take up racquets and have a casual hit in hopes of scoring more registrations once this season wraps up.
Players under 12 years of age will be greeted by all the equipment they need on the day at Shepparton Lawn Tennis Club on Saturday from 9:30-10:30am, with a free BBQ on offer as well.
“It’s welcome for anyone to come along and just try the sport of tennis,” association president Christian Willmott said.
“We’re trying to grow the association in the GV, and we want to attract more kids to it to build up clubs. We don’t care which club they go to, as long as it grows the sport.
“It helps plan for next season, and it’s a chance to show a bit of interest so that we’re not forgotten about when next season comes around.
“With young kids, it’s about trying to get them outdoors playing sport, and that’s what we want to see grow.”
There are the natural challenges that come with regional Australia’s remarkably diverse sporting landscape as far as retention, of course.
Willmott paints a positive picture of the occasion as far as turnout and overall engagement he feels the day will provide, though.
“We had 20 turn up without any notice last time, so I’m hoping we’ll get between 50 and 100 for this one,” Willmott said.
“I think we’re on track. We’re getting out to primary schools and making sure they and parents are aware.
“Cricket and basketball do take some away from us, but coming off the back of Aus Open, it’s just about trying to build up the profile.
“It’s been stable for a couple of years, but we want to grow it again as it’s a great way for kids to get active and stay healthy.”
