With senior cricket taking leave over the long weekend, the spotlight turned on the wonderful world of junior action in a special edition of Saturday Sundries.
News photographer Megan Fisher roamed the boundary for day one of the under-16 clash between Karramomus Rowan and Old Students-Nagambie at Kialla Park.
Paul Parsons often appears in Haisman Shield match reports, but in this instance, a younger member of the clan stole the show in Kyabram colours.
At 6-28 against Numurkah, the Redbacks’ under-14s were between a rock and a hard place until Rhys Parsons stood like Hercules and held the stones from further falling.
The number six batter hunkered down for 22 overs, belting 14 boundaries and four maximums on the way to a handsome 90-run smoke show.
Unfortunately for Parsons, his whack came to end there, 10 runs short of a century, ending Kyabram’s innings on 138.
However, with Numurkah sitting at 3-27 heading into day two, the young blade has given his side a shot at victory at the very least.
Why oh wide?
Google the phrase ‘tight bowling’ and one name should pop up immediately: Jack Hudson.
Facing Northerners in the under-16 division, the Notre Dame-Central Park-St Brendan’s bowler returned sizzling figures of 4-1 from four overs as he played a leading role in stopping the Jets short on 113.
Hudson found himself on a hat-trick and bowled at an economy of 0.25, yet the only score conceded off the young Tiger’s bowling came from his own industry.
From his 17 deliveries, the only slight was a wide — now that’s impressive.
In the Cross hairs
If Karramomus’ senior side is looking for a specialist to ice an innings in the future, it needs to look no further than the club’s under-16s.
Opening bowler Nathan Cross may not have found any luck in either of his first or second spells against Mooroopna on Friday, but the hard yards eventually showed as Cross was bought on for the final over of the day.
The young gun took three wickets in four balls to curtail any ideas of a late Mooroopna flurry, including the dismissal of danger bat Max Willoughby (38 runs).
His trio of scalps equalled his season tally to date and it could prove to be the confidence injection Cross needs to kick on and become the Bloods’ chief strike bowler.
Extra, extra
Upon first glance, nothing sticks out about the under-14B score between Karramomus Trevaskis and Katandra.
Tom Bicknell’s knock of 71 to supplement the Bloods’ healthy total of 233 maybe raises an eyebrow.
The kicker, however, was located at the bottom of the scorecard.
Katandra coughed up 86 extras with the ball, consisting of 38 wides, 26 no balls, 20 byes and a pair of leg byes to make up more than a third of Karramomus’ score.
It’s nothing a good net session can’t iron out, though, and we’re sure the Eagles will come out hungry with bat in hand on day two to defend their total.
