The Roos will travel to Wodonga Raiders this Saturday who are in tenth position with three wins. It’s a very tight ladder. Corowa needs to record their seventh win this Saturday.
Last Saturday Corowa P1 travelled up to Alexandra Park fielding their strongest team yet, with the inclusions of Charlie Hemphrey, Matt Grantham and Jarryd Hatton providing a significant boost to the side.
Winning the toss and electing to bat, Corowa got off to a shaky start, losing Matthew Wilson early after a brisk eight off seven balls and Shaun Smith for a duck, leaving the team under pressure at 2/10.
However, the experienced Charlie Hemphrey steadied the ship, crafting a sublime innings of 78 off 85 balls.
Hemphrey’s innings, which included 12 boundaries, showcased exceptional stroke play and composure under pressure, anchoring Corowa’s innings while wickets fell at the other end.
Matt Grantham provided crucial support in the middle order, contributing 28 off 44 balls.
Granthams’s partnership with Hemphrey briefly steadied the innings, adding valuable runs during a period where the East Albury bowlers were on top.
However, Grantham’s dismissal being stumped off the bowling of Matt Heap, broke the partnership and left Corowa searching for momentum.
As the innings progressed, Jarryd Hatton delivered a late surge, smashing 26 off just 20 balls, including a six and two boundaries.
His aggressive intent lifted Corowa’s scoring rate in the death overs, ensuring they reached a competitive total of 177.
East Albury chased down Corowa total of 177 in a tense finish, but not without facing stiff resistance from Corowa’s bowlers.
The innings began with Corowa applying immediate pressure through disciplined bowling.
Ben Mitchell delivered the first breakthrough, dismissing Kris Milosta for a well-constructed 41 with a high catch from Matthew Wilson.
Mitchell’s accuracy and control yielded figures of 2/40 from his full 10 overs, including the dismissal of Alex Hinkley for just six, which slowed East Albury's momentum during the middle overs.
Jarryd Hatton was the pick of Corowa’s bowlers, producing a fiery spell to finish with 3/48 from his 10 overs.
Hatton struck early to remove Darren Keenes for four, brilliantly caught by Wilson, before dismissing Lachlan Scales (10) and Kieran Pell (4) in quick succession.
Hatton's ability to swing the ball and his clever changes in pace kept the opposition batsmen guessing, preventing any one partnership from running away with the game.
In the later stages, Mark Athanitis bowled with precision and picked up two key wickets, removing Miles Hemann-Petersen for a crucial 52 and trapping Caleb Hobbs lbw for 36 when both batsmen looked set to finish the chase comfortably.
Athanitis’s late strikes gave Corowa hope, reducing East Albury to 7/174. However, Matt Heap (10*) and Archie Storer (2*) held their nerve, finding the gaps and rotating the strike to see East Albury home with just seven balls to spare.
Throughout the innings, Corowa’s bowlers displayed heart and discipline. Nick Grant, while unlucky not to take a wicket, bowled economically in his early spell but conceded extras that allowed East Albury to ease the pressure.
Patrick Lavis and Luke Backhouse contributed tight spells, keeping the run rate in check at key intervals. Despite the loss, Corowa’s bowlers fought valiantly, taking the game to the final overs and showcasing their ability to perform under pressure.
C Grade Div 2
The C2 team hosted the Albury Umpires at Morris Park which promised to be an entertaining game between the second and third placed teams.
Corowa won the toss and elected to bat on a hot afternoon with Lachie Raggett and Nathan Anic.
Albury Umpires started well with the ball bowling tight early, but it wouldn’t be long before Raggett broke the shackles and started scoring freely on his way to his third half-century of the season making 60 with seven fours and three sixes, with the score on 81 when he was dismissed.
This would see the arrival of Mick Drew into the middle.
Drew and Anic dug in for a few overs before the scoring started to pick up again as they put on a 91 partnership for the second wicket before Anic departed in the 31st over for a well-made 57.
Then D Lavis and N Rhodes came and went in quick succession as they were trying to up the run rate.
Burdon then joined Drew at the crease and the pair put on 42 in 24 balls before Burdon was run out for a quick fire 26 from 14 balls.
Corowa finished their innings 6/237 with Mick Drew being unbeaten on 78 which is his second half century for the season.
Defending 238 the Albury Umpires got off to a flying start before Jordan Wilson got the wicket of the Albury Umpires’ captain with the score on 48.
Then Nathan Rhodes claimed his first wicket for the season getting the other opening batsman out with only four more runs added to the total, seeing Albury Umpires 2/52 before Wilson claimed two wickets in an over without any runs being added to the total and Corowa started to get on top in the contest.
Albury Umpires worked their way back into the contest with some solid contributions from Kiffen, Greer and Keatings which saw Corowa bring young gun Eli Lavis back into the attack.
Lavis turned the game on its head claiming 3/1 in the 36th over with his raw pace being too much for the Albury Umpires to handle.
Lavis claimed 4/36 and was well supported by Jordan Wilson 4/44 who was equally as damaging as Corowa bowled out the opposition for 200.
With five games left in the home and away season the C2 team will now look to gain some serious momentum and form heading into finals with some key players also returning this week when hosting Wodonga Raiders.
Junior Country Week
East Albury chose to bat on a grassy Ball Park deck. In a solid display of bowing and fielding, by Corowa, East Albury was restricted to 9-153.
The last 15 overs were a highlight, as Easts were 4-110. But good bowling by Abley, 3-28 off nine overs, and Spud collecting 2-31, contained the batsmen.
Corowa’s batting didn’t start well, being 4-28. Spud and Jay, however, steadied the ship taking the score to 111, before Lavis departed for a superb 56.
A mini collapse then saw the Roos crash from 5-111 to 8-117 and in trouble.
But Nugent and Abley got the boys home with two wickets to spare in a huge win for the team.
