When Corowa’s sixth wicket fell, three others followed quickly to see the Roos out for 173, 37 runs short of New City’s imposing 210.
With four rounds to go, it’s a tight ladder with switches in the top order every week: East Albury 74, St Patrick’s 69, North Albury 69, Lavington 61, Corowa 58, Belvoir 54, Tallangatta 51, Albury 50, New City 45, Wodonga Raiders 30, Wodonga 17, Barnanduda 3.
Corowa hosts Tallangatta this Saturday. The standard is high. The stakes are high. Get down and support your home team!
It was a scorching Saturday afternoon at Urana Road as Corowa faced off against New City in a highly anticipated clash. Corowa’s skipper, Ben Mitchell, lost the toss, and his side was sent into the field first.
The Corowa bowlers started strongly, with in-form pacer Nick Grant making an immediate impact, taking the first wicket early in the innings.
Jarryd Hatton soon followed with a stunning caught-and-bowled dismissal, reducing New City to 2/24. However, the New City duo of Fawad Malook and Visnujiith Parakirama steadied the innings, looking to wrestle back control.
Their stand was broken when Mitchell took the prized wicket of Malook for 20, leaving New City at a precarious 3/48.
Parakirama continued to showcase his class, combining solid stroke play with power hitting to guide his team back into contention.
Corowa maintained pressure through Charlie Hemphrey and Daniel Athanitis, who bowled well in tandem.
Hemphrey struck to dismiss Tuffey, while Athanitis claimed the scalps of Harrington and Ud Din, reducing New City to 7/188 at the second drinks break.
Parakirama continued his masterful innings, finding crucial support from the lower order before he was finally dismissed by Grant for an outstanding 109 off 129 balls.
Grant finished as the pick of the bowlers with 4/28 off his eight overs, while Athanitis chipped in with two wickets.
New City posted a challenging total of 211.
Chasing 211 for victory, Corowa struggled to find momentum against New City’s disciplined bowling attack.
Matthew Wilson was the first to fall, caught by Aaron Grant off the bowling of Shayan Shayan for just three runs.
Charlie Hemphrey offered some resistance with a well-compiled 29 off 37 balls before he was dismissed by Malook, caught by Dominic Gibbons.
Jarred Lane fought hard but was trapped leg-before-wicket by Nizam Ud Din for 13.
The middle order attempted to stabilize the innings, with Shaun Smith leading the charge. His 44 off 57 balls, which included four boundaries and a six, was the highlight of Corowa’s innings.
Skipper Ben Mitchell contributed 21 before falling to Parakirama, while Jarryd Hatton (8) and Daniel Athanitis (27) added valuable runs.
Despite their efforts, Corowa struggled to build partnerships.
Fawad Malook was relentless with the ball, dismantling the batting lineup with four crucial wickets, including Jay Lavis (1), Nick Grant (1), and Kade Wilson, who was stumped for a duck.
His dominant spell ensured Corowa could not reach the target.
Mark Athanitis remained unbeaten on eight but with wickets tumbling at the other end, Corowa fell short, bowled out well before reaching the target.
Malook’s remarkable spell secured a memorable victory for New City, leaving Corowa to reflect on their missed opportunities.
B Grade
A disappointing five run loss to third bottom side New City saw the B grade side drop to seventh on the ladder.
Losing the toss and bowling first New City managed a total of 7 for 174 off their 45 overs with some solid batting and good partnerships.
The total could have been higher if not for some tight bowling from Jack Eales, Tyler Abley and Joe Lavis.
The batting innings didn’t quite go to plan, with a few getting starts but not going on with it.
It was left to the two youngsters in Leeroy Chester and Eli Lavis to get us home, in what was the highlight of the day, they toughed it out, showing maturity beyond their years to nearly get us home in a huge effort only just to fall short.
C Grade Div 2
The Corowa C2 side was greeted by a fast-looking outfield at Tallangatta, both potential finalists having plenty to play for.
Stand in captain Pat Mitchell won the coin toss, electing to bat first.
It was a family affair with three generations of Raggets playing. Lachlan and Billy Ragget started strongly, playing expansive shots before Lachlan was caught in the deep for 26 in the fifth over.
Nathan Rhodes (76 off 58 balls) came to the crease and showed his class, playing shots to all parts of the ground.
Billy continued on his scoring spree, smashing nine boundaries and six sixes on his way to 104 off 75 balls, eventually caught out sharing a 157-run partnership with Rhodesy and the score 2/201 after 23 overs.
Mitchell and Rhodes then departed in quick fashion, Jordan Wilson strode to the crease with a look of determination and concentration.
Partnered by Johno Perry (23no) the boys batted well forming a strong partnership. With a mammoth total looming, Wilson in the form of his life found himself needing 23 runs off the final four balls to reach a century.
Wilson proceeded to hit three sixes and a four to fall agonisingly short on 99 not out, a brilliant knock off only 49 deliveries, scoring 82 runs in boundaries.
Corowa finished a massive 4/339 off their 40 overs.
With a strong total to defend Wilson was given the new ball, striking in the first over.
The experienced Tallangatta batsmen moved the score to 1/50 from seven overs before Wilson struck again, Wilson finishing with 3/35 in a dominant display of cricket.
A brilliant direct hit runout from Jacko Williamson had Tallangatta reeling.
It was then, stand in captain Pat Mitchell realised this was his only chance for a bowl all year, brought himself on.
The postman delivered by bowling Tallangatta’s set batsman second ball, triggering a Brett Lee chainsaw celebration and Corowa taking an early drinks break at 5/104.
Mitchell, riding high on confidence, then knocked down the stumps of the incoming batsman with a two-wicket maiden, finishing with figure of 2/1 off two overs.
With the game in the bag the young Barber boys bowled tightly, Rhylee 1/17 and Jacko 0/10. The Tallangatta innings ending at 8/169 from 40 overs.
A special mention to Kobe Ragget and Zach Playford for fielding and having a bowl at the end of the game. And Jason Ragget for coming out of retirement once more.
Under 16s
On Friday night the 16s took on Baranduda away for their first hit out of the new year.
Winning the toss first and electing to bat. Joe Lavis and Levi Phibbs opened with the bat. Levi departed early being bowled. Joe Lavis and Austin Ross-Anderson knuckled down and kept the scoreboard moving fluently.
Joe took it to the bowling attack, hitting four sixes and five fours. Joe retired at 50 off 25 balls.
Austin played some lovely cricket shots but was dismissed for 30. At the 10 over mark Corowa were 2/89.
A couple quick wickets fell as Corowa looked in a little trouble.
Rhylee Barber and Archie Bedford both looked the goods as Rhylee made 15 and Archie made 20 before they both departed trying to up the ante at the end of the innings.
Young Callan Corcoran coming up from the under 14s made a terrific 22 not out to finish off the innings. Corowa finished their 20 overs at 9/159.
Joe Lavis started off with an early wicket in as Levi Phibbs took a sharp catch.
Jack Torney looked sharp with ball in hand as he was tough to handle. Jack collected an early wicket also. Eli Lavis and Levi Phibbs made it hard for the batters to score.
They both collected a wicket each as the scores were 4/43 at 10 overs. Callan Corcoran and Rustyn Collins were both handed the ball.
The pair proved too much as they bowled with great skill.
Callan finished with 2/7 off two overs and Rustyn finished with 1/4 off two overs. Baranduda finished at 8/89 as the boys took home the chocolates.
An all-round performance from the boys this week. The under 16s take on St Pats away next week in a 2 day game.

Back after the break we faced a Wodonga team looking for its first win of the season.
Wodonga won the toss and elected to bowl to take advantage of the cooler conditions at the start of the day’s play. Jagger and Abe opened the batting for us and treating the bowlers with respect moved the total along for the team as the bowlers changed and then changed again.
Abe was the first wicket to fall with the score on 50 in the 11th over, well and truly doing his job as an opening batsman.
Jagger then paired with Cal Corcoran keep the scoreboard ticking over until Jagger retired on 24 bringing Archie to the crease.
Cal moved his score along to 23 before there was a run call mixup with Cal runout the result. Archie and Dougy kept the runs flowing to have us 2/98 at the end of our 20 overs.
After a horrid run with the bat, it was good to see Dougy get some confidence back with the bat.
Over to the bowlers to defend and Jake Witherden and Jagger Doody started with the ball.
The focus of - on line and length - at training paid off with both boys bowling a tight line and length and with the pressure on the bat Jake cleaned up a nice caught and bowled to have Wodonga 1/6 after six overs. Abe and Ollie McLellan then came on for a bowl with Ollie snaring a wicket early on with a running Jagger Doody catching a skied ball behind first slip.
Ollie then snared a caught and bowled in his next over as we had Wodonga 3/26 at the half way mark.
The boys bowled really well, keeping it tight, keeping Wodonga to 3/62 after 18 before Jake Witherden came back on to finish out the remaining two with Archie.
There was a chance for a runout in the 19th over with Finley Douglas pinging the ball at the stumps at the bowler’s end collecting the offside bail on its way through resulting in a great runout by Fin.
In the end it was a comfortable win by the boys and a win we needed to bank on our march to finals.

An exciting victory for the Corowa U/14 team against New City at Thurgoona. It was a well-played game with strong performances both in batting and bowling. Jackson Barber and George Smith contributed significantly to the batting with their retired scores 30* and 33* respectively , while Oli Matthews 22*and Lucas Tait 7* provided a solid finish as Corowa finished their 20 overs at 3 for 114.
The bowlers did an excellent job in keeping it tight, especially in the first 10 overs, which set the game up nicely.
Albie Wood managed to get a crucial breakthrough, and the effective fielding, especially by Will Tourney and Jackson Barber, helped secure the win as they restricted New City to 3 for 107. Winning by seven runs in such a close match was very thrilling for everyone involved. Well done team!

First game back from the Xmas break saw our boys travel to Collings Park to take on Albury White in very warm conditions.
The Roos lost the toss and were sent out to field and it didn’t take long before we got a breakthrough with Hugh Hicks taking a spectacular catch off Billy Witherden’s bowling.
Billy backed it up next ball knocking over the stumps to be on a hat trick that unfortunately he didn’t get although going mighty close. This got the ball rolling for Corowa.
Ollie Bedford did a fantastic direct hit the following over and then wickets to Bill Smith and Max Tull had Albury reeling at 5/22.
Albury fought back over the next nine overs not losing a wicket and putting runs on the board before Bailey Hicks was able to get himself a really good caught and bowled.
Jake Rhodes and Jack Timms chimed in with a wicket each to finish Albury off all out for 81. Best of the bowlers Billy 2/8, Jake 1/6 and Hugh did not concede a run from his two overs.
The challenge was set and the boys knew the target was very gettable. We opened up with George Smith and Jake Rhodes but lost George in the first over.
Albury thought they had got their man, but Jack Timms joined Jake at the crease with the pair putting on a well-deserved 40 run partnership with both retired.
Hugh Hicks and Ollie Bedford then took over with both batting really well before Hugh went in the 17th over for a well made 11.
The job wasn’t quite done with the bowling tight, but it was Ollie that steered the ship home to give Corowa a much deserved win.
All round really good team effort. Run scorers Jake 21, Ollie 18 and Jack 13 all not out.

It was an absolute scorcher at the Howlong footy ground for the first game back from the Christmas break.
Oscar Amor won the toss and sent Howlong in to bat. No cobwebs for our captain picking up a wicket in the first over and another in his second finishing with 2/12.
Billy Hunter Jack Nixon and Harry Closter all taking a wicket each. Howlong made 54 after their 20 overs. An excellent job in the field by the Corowa boys.
With the bat Jack Nixon and Billy Hunter got the run chase underway pretty quickly Jack 18* and Billy 14* got us off to a great start. Harry Closter batted really well at number six making 19*.
The boys cruised to victory ending their 20 overs on 149.
Thanks very much to Wes Amor for scoring and all the parents who come along and help out.
