Training was taken by last year’s North Melbourne premiership star Amy Smith who spoke the night before at Corowa Golf Club, at the Marcus Fraser Ambrose event’s sportsman’s night.
Amy is the daughter of Melbourne and North Melbourne’s Shaun Smith who is credited with the highest mark ever taken in the AFL - an absolute screamer for Melbourne against Brisbane.
But Amy has bragging rights over her father, according to Marcus Fraser Ambrose event organiser Shaun Whitechurch, who relayed what Amy said: “He’s ‘just’ taken the highest mark, I’m a premiership player!”
It was a masterstroke by Whitechurch to lure the Smiths to Corowa.
“It was the first public speaking at a sportsman’s night by Amy,” he said.
“She started off a bit nervous Saturday night but when she finished taking football training Sunday, she was oozing with confidence.
“Amy said she will try and organise a few North Melbourne girls to come up here for training during the season. That would be great.”
More than 30 female Roos’ footballers listened intently to Amy’s talk before their training session on Sunday morning.
Amy was forthcoming with how the North Melbourne team banded together after their heartbreaking loss to Brisbane in the 2023 AFLW grand final.
“After the game we knew we had to put in the work, to get fitter and be better prepared,” she said.
Amy, who crossed over to AFL late, from being a very handy basketballer, provided an insight into her training, diet and overall effort to be a stronger, fitter and ultimately better player.
“It’s what you put in, every little bit counts, but don’t overload in any one session is my tip.”

She and her father Shaun also worked on her kicking with every opportunity they had.
“We would do video of Amy kicking and review and work on areas of improvement,” Shaun said.
After handing around her prized 2024 premiership medal the talented winger and her father then took the first half hour of training before returning to Melbourne for another engagement but promised to be back.
