While the Redbacks are currently in ninth place on the 13-team ladder, they are only nine points outside the top four.
They have the opportunity to improve dramatically on that ranking during the final three rounds - facing Waaia (12th), Nagambie (10th) and Karramomus Baker (2nd) in the final three weeks.
On the back of an outstanding all-round effort from Zavier Parsons the Redbacks took the first step to improving their ranking with a seven-wicket win against Mooroopna.
After the Redbacks chose to bowl, Parsons took 2-5 from three overs and contributed to Mooroopna only managing 7-59 from 20 overs.
He then top scored with 17 not out, from 19 balls with two boundaries, as the Redbacks scored the winning runs in the final over.
Wesley McNally supported Parsons with the ball, taking 2-3 from two overs.
- A 36-run Redbacks win against bottom under-14 A-grade team Tatura has it poised just outside the top four with two home and away games remaining.
They sit fifth on the ladder, six points outside the top four, but face the second and third ranked teams in the final rounds.
A 20-over tally of 8-103 was built on the back of another hard hitting Riley Nicholson innings – his 35 runs coming off just 24 deliveries and included a pair of sixes with three boundaries.
Nicholson was supported by Zavier Parsons (19 not out from 21 deliveries) and Asher Porch (14), before Jimmy Badgery bowled two maiden overs for a three wicket return in a spectacular spell.
Five other bowlers took wickets as Tatura managed just 9-66 in reply.
- In the B-grade under-12 competition the second-ranked Redbacks will face top team Katandra Eagles on Friday, January 31 at Kyabram P-12 College.
The Redbacks are unbeaten this season.
- Goulburn Murray Cricket’s junior season resumes this week, the under-13 competition starting Wednesday night when fifth-ranked Fire Brigade face top team Moama White and second-from-the-bottom Tongala confronts Leitchville-Gunbower.
There are three rounds of the Goulburn division, which involves Fire Brigade, remaining before the top two teams play off in the grand final on Sunday, February 23.
In the Murray division there are four rounds remaining before the Wednesday, February 19 grand final.
At under-15 level top team, and unbeaten, Fire Brigade face two of the bottom three teams, Leitchville-Gunbower and Tongala, in the final two rounds before the finals.
Semi-finals are scheduled for Tuesday, February 18 and the final is a week later.
Fire Brigade’s second ranked under-17 team returned for 2025 with a narrow loss to top team Echuca, despite a 47-run opening stand by Jamish Stewart (20) and Oscar Carver (29) to start its innings.
They finished with 4-85, Archer Backway also making it to double figures in the Twenty-20 format.
Echuca lost star opener Ky Henson for a first-ball duck, caught off the bowling of Riley Carver, but scored the winning runs with three balls remaining. Wil Harrison was the star for Fire Brigade with the ball, taking 3-16 from four overs.
He had support from co-captain Riley Carver, who continued his country week form with 2-5 from four overs.
In the last two rounds the team faces Moama, before a final round bye.
The under-11 competition does not resume until Friday, February 7 and continues for the following two weekends.
