In a slight change of format it included a sit-down lunch before golf, featuring guest speaker Simon O’Donnell.
One of Deniliquin’s most famous sporting sons, O’Donnell has featured as an international cricketer and media commentator, alongside other business interests.
Another of the district’s great sporting sons, Leo Barry, was represented at the luncheon by his father, Leo Barry snr.
After a delicious meal more than 20 teams ventured out onto the course for a four-person ambrose event.
While the welcome rain could have waited a couple of days, it did not deter the enthusiastic golfers.
The winning team, representing Ray White Real Estate, comprised Sean Drennan, Vince Kelly, Magnus Aitken and Geoff King.
The club thanks all sponsors and players who contributed to a successful and valuable fundraiser.
While Friday’s golf was able to proceed despite the weather, the same was not the case on Saturday, when the ‘drink’ the course received led to it being closed for the day.
It was open again on Sunday when a stroke event was played, and this also gave any ladies the opportunity to compete in the second round of their championships.
Sunday’s winner was Jimmy Poka jnr with a one under par round for a net 69, from runner-up Ross Taylor net 70.
Ladies also participated in the second round of their championships last Thursday.
The day’s winner was Karen Druitt net 70 on countback to Pauline Sherwin.
The final round of the ladies championships was being played yesterday.
Results were not available at the time of going to print, but will be in the PT next week.
After two rounds Vicki Brunker held a three-shot lead over Pauline Davis as she tries to add another championship trophy to her long list.
In B-grade Jayne Armytage was three shots clear of Carol Hardman, in C-grade Jane Glowrey had an eight shot lead over Pauline Sherwin and in D-grade Leanne Mulham had a massive 32-shot lead and appeared to have the title sewn up.
On Wednesday the usual stableford event was played.
A-grade winner was John Penna with 39 points on countback to Peter Joice, and B-grade winner was Geoff Mulham, also 39, from runner-up Rob Armytage 38.
Coming up we have another busy week on the course, starting tomorrow with a stableford and qualifying round for the Falkiner knockout.
Tuesday is 9 holes stableford, Wednesday the usual stableford event and Thursday is a fourball best ball.
Next Saturday is stableford aggregate.
The next charity day will raise funds for MND, with the 2024 Big Freeze 10 on Sunday, June 2.
It will be four-person ambrose, with men’s, women’s and mixed teams permitted.
Cost will be $200 per team ($50 per player) which includes a MND beanie, barbecue lunch and snacks after golf, and entry into a mystery draw.
Other activities will include raffles, silent auction, novelty and big holes, and a putt-off after golf.
So get your team together for a great day of golf, while supporting such a worthwhile cause.
