Now sitting third, equal on points with fourth and fifth placed Leitchville-Gunbower and Echuca White, the Tongala team has second-bottom Rushworth and second-ranked Echuca South in the final two rounds of the season.
Its comfortable win against Stanhope came for the loss of only one wicket and with almost 12 overs to spare. It scored 1-113 after Stanhope had set a 25-over target of 5-112.
Stanhope started well on the back of a 21-run contribution from Cooper Fisher (off just 18 balls) and Ashton Nurse’s punishing six-ball 16.
Nurse’s entire total was made up of boundaries before he was retired. He failed to score off the first ball he faced, but struck the next four balls to the boundary and faced one more delivery before being retired.
Alyssa Braithwaite continued the momentum with 10 runs from 20 balls and later Liam Northausen struck three boundaries in his 20-ball 15-run total.
Chelsea Braithwaite made seven late in the innings, with Jack West, Oliver Croft and Cyril Cleveland the Tongala wicket-takers.
Kane Pyke took a while to warm up for Tongala, but the last three deliveries of his 20-run score were all boundaries. Twin brother Lucas made 11 from 20 and then star number three Kevin Maurizi made 23 from 18 balls (including four boundaries).
Phoenix Greenman (15 off 12), Cyril Cleveland (19 not out off nine) and Noah Virivirilau (14 not out off 10) all contributed to the win.
Ashton Nurse took the only wicket, 1-10 from two overs.
– Fire Brigade’s home and away season is over in the under-17 competition after it secured a finals spot with a three-run win.
Batting first, Fire Brigade scored 8-178 from 40 overs as James Hargreaves smashed seven boundaries in a 33-ball score of 44. He had support from co-captain Oliver Barnett (29 off 46) and Charlie Pekin (not out 28, off 42 deliveries).
Hargreaves and Pekin added 67 runs for the eighth wicket.
With one wicket in hand, Moama needed 21 runs off the final over to score an unlikely win when Riley Carver was given the ball to bowl the 40th over.
Finn Murphy hit the first ball for six and followed that up with a two. The third ball was two byes and then Murphy hit another boundary to make it seven runs from two balls for the win.
Another two runs to Murphy, who finished on 76 not out (off 82 balls) and a final ball bye saw Moama finished on 9-175 - three runs shy of Fire Brigade’s total.
Oscar Carver finished with 3-39 from eight overs and Riley Carver 2-37 from his eight overs. Will Harrison claimed 2-30 from eight to be the pick of the bowlers.
- Fire Brigade’s third win of the under-13 GMC season came after it was sent into bat by Bamawm Lockington United.
The Kyabram team scored 8-167 from its 25 overs, Max Gould setting an early tone with 24 from 28 balls (four boundaries) and Billy Sheppard scoring 17.
They were both overshadowed by the contributions of Aidan Greiner (30 not out off 26 balls) and Mason Kilpatrick (21 not out).
Hudson Boylan, who made a quickfire 15 off nine balls (with three boundaries) was then the team’s best bowler with 2-10 from two overs. Four other players took wickets.
In its final game of the season Fire Brigade faces third-ranked Rochester, hoping to improve on its 3-6 win/loss record for the season.
- In under-15 cricket Fire Brigade easily reeled in the 62-run total of Leitchville Gunbower from day one of its two-day game at Kyabram P-12 College.
The top team remained unbeaten when openers Jack Carver and Antonio Depasquale both faced 20 deliveries and retired for scores of 15 and 12.
Archie Sheppard arrived at the crease later to contribute 16, but it was the 14-ball, 23-run tally of Charlie Pekin (which included five boundaries) that was a highlight.
Isaac Greely came to the wicket late and finished with a four-boundary 22 as Fire Brigade finished on 4-125 from 22.3 overs.
Fire Brigade faces fifth-ranked Tongala in the final home and away game of the season before the finals.
- Tongala must win its final round game against top team Fire Brigade, and rely on Echuca losing to the bottom team, to reach the GMC under-15 finals.
The team lost to third-ranked Rochester on day two of its game on Thursday, having been set a 40-over target of 8-212.
At 4-28 things were not looking good, but a 31-run partnership between Baylee Letizia (18 off 39 balls) and Angus Greenman (13 off 36 balls) got things slightly back on track.
Apart from an unbeaten 13, off 17 balls, from Jordan Reid it was one way traffic and Tongala was 8-89 in defeat after 27.4 overs.
- Liam Parsons and Jensen Wills set up a win for Kyabram Redbacks in the Cricket Shepparton under-10 competition last week.
The pair took five wickets between them as Notre Dame was restricted to 99 runs off 20 overs.
The Redbacks then compiled 149 runs, Callum Parsons not out eight off 13 balls and one of four batters to strike boundaries. Austin Thomas, Tyler Kenny and Mitchell Parsons were the others.
– Aiden Drew scored the winning runs off the last ball of Kyabram Redbacks’ under-12 A-grade match with Waaia on Friday.
Drew scored a single off the last ball of the 20-over game when the teams were tied on 99 runs apiece. He finished 14 not out as the Redbacks compiled 4-100 in reply to Waaia’s 6-99.
Earlier Lacy Parsons had been the pick of the Redbacks bowlers with 2-8 from two overs.
When it was the Redbacks turn to bat Drew was supported by Zavier Parsons (21 from 15 balls, with three boundaries), Myles Murphy (13) and Cooper Ohlsen (16 off 15 balls).
