Tomorrow’s match commences at 11am, all welcome.
NAGAMBIE
A big finish claimed the 2024 Finnigan four-ball, four teams held the equal lead with +6 after round one of the club's most sought-after events, but a big finish by Chris Roberts and Peter Lawrence saw the unheralded duo winning the biggest prizes of their golfing careers.
A round one total of +3 left Roberts and Lawrence languishing in the chasing pack, but a +5 opening nine and +5 closing nine, was enough to snatch victory with the best second round total of +10 and a two-week Finnigan four-ball total of +13.
Roberts put together a brilliant round with Lawrence backing him up the entire way.
Runners-up also with an excellent second round were Graeme Cusack and Jim Doyle coming up with a +8 for the day and two-week total of +13.
Unlucky third was the father and son combination of Jeremy and Ryan Ezard also finishing on +13 for the two week event but falling to third with +7 on the day.
The nearest the pin prizes went to Graeme Galvin with a strong iron on the long par three eighth, John James with precision on the short par three 13th and David Love enjoying a solid strike up to the tricky 16th.
Many thanks go to the two sponsors of the Finnigan four-ball Barry Cryer and Dean Brown making the special event a little more special and credit goes to the volunteer ground staff for great course preparation making the course play fair for all.
Next week's golf will be a stroke monthly medal on office duty will be G. Whiteman and in the bar W. LeCerf.
HILL TOP
Wednesday, May 22 was Volunteers Day. Hill Top GC has plenty of them. From outdoors to indoors, people give their time freely to make the club better and keep it ticking over. Thanks to all those unsung heroes.
Monday, May 20 was World Bee Day. These two celebration days are only two days apart and there is an obvious link between volunteers and worker bees.
So, make a beeline to thank those who are volunteers around the place and who keep it buzzing!
There was a small swarm of players for “You Bee-uty” Tuesday’s open stroke. Twenty-one honey combers volunteered to suffer heat stroke in the sunshine even if they were mainly Bee Graders! And the Queen Bees ruled! B-ec Jeffers and Phyl Fiddes dominated the drones bee-tween(?) them. Only a countback separated them on -3, and the in-form Bec won by a bee’s knees or some equivalent part of the male insect’s anatomy.
Steve Allison and James Ibbotson and Ian Elders, all finishing on -1, fought for the minor prizes of pollen, with Ian bee-ing the one to miss out on the sweetener.
Volunteer baker to the work shed volunteers and (many other grateful recipients around town), golfer- gourmet Gail Wootton, may have overcooked her score on this occasion and unfortunately got stuck to the bottom of the pan. Bon appetit Gail!
Volunteer Alex Howson was wide-eyed in wonder with his hum dinging tee shot on the ninth, to collect the Tat Engineering nearest the pin prize. Try to keep a lid on it Alex!
Thursday’s great weather had 25 players abuzz with stableford expectation as they got stung with the golfing bug. There was no Bee Grade this day, but Ray “Wing It” Whitfield was the outright winner on 39 points. Nathan Bowles (38) dished it up to the others to take second place at the table of the triumphant.
Lou Villani and Ray Flett fought it out on 35 each to finish third and fourth after applying a countback. $5 each for a violet crumble! Holiday haymaker, Bec Jeffers zoomed in on the last prize, her 34 out-countbacking Jac Farrow and Ian “Luigi” Lelievre the unbee-lievable!
Probably a little sheepish, Col Barlow may need to reconsider his new swing and beef it up a bit, by the look of the results.
When it comes to nearest the pins some golfers just keep on beekeeping on. The new Mr Do Bee, (anyone remember that kids show that we all sang along to?), Steve Allison, has done it again on the ninth hole!
Twenty-one Chook Runners gathered like bees around the honeypot on the front nine on Thursday arvo. There was no bird flu here, but the “birds” flew the flag again around the course.
Busy bee Bev Roberts (19) and Lynectar Flett (18 countback) were the true bee-lievers and took out first and second places, Lyn stinging Jeff Huddle and Alex Howson into third and fourth places on a countback.
It is noteworthy that Chicken Supremos from the last chicken feast, “Johnny Bee Good” Rennie and Noel Gorrill came back to earth with a thud this week! As Angie would say “Que sera!”
Nearest the pins on the ninth was almost in volunteer Dave Roberts’ clutches. His shot to the green was thought to be unbee-table(?). But who came out of the Huddle but Jeff to beat him on the buzzer! So, the Tat Engineering prize was clutched by Jeff Huddle instead!
Saturday’s stableford was to be a bee-ry reward for the Privilege Cup winner and there were plenty of volunteers to take on that task. Sixty-five clubhouse swarming members took swing to have the right to put the bite on anyone in sight for a freebee pot.
Lewis Homes were again the sponsors for the day.
Steve Zolich and Linc Wellington had bee-n the early clubhouse leaders until Paul Cornelius briefly, then Shorty McNaughton stormed into contention in the lattermost group of the day to claim the Cup with his buzzing 42 points. He was three points clear.
Shorty took out the A-grade honeypot, with tall Paul Cornelius (39) in second place, but having an otherwise highly successful day.
Bee Grade was the place to bee. Shocked prize-winners there were Jeff “Befuddled” Huddle and Leigh “Bee in a Bottle” Thornton whose pedestrian countback 33 points somehow claimed the prizemoney. Their new motto may well be, “Don’t Worry Bee Happy!”
C-grade was far more believable. Michael “Boney” Moroney and “Sting” Ray Whitfield both scored 36 points, with Michael winning on a countback.
Eager-beevers (?) to become placegetters down the the line included Steve Zzzzolich (38), Linc Wellington (38), the appropriately named Privilege Cup contender Darcy Brewer (37), Graham Mc Intosh (36), Bruce Gross (36), John “Killer Bee” Keller (35), one from the arc-hives in volunteer, Brian Coe (35) and Drew Curtiss (35).
Nearest the pins went to Jody Webber (Lewis Homes third), double dunker Paul Cornelius (Central Tyres sixth and the Mulcahy Livestock 14th) and Drew Curtiss (Tat Engineering ninth). Drew pocketed the jackpot, therefore.
Paul Cornelius also had an amazing eagle on the par five fourth hole to cap off an impressive day. Unfortunately, the nest was a bit bare as only last week Tim Nicholson had claimed the same glory and largely emptied it out.
Don’t forget to enter the events on offer on the upcoming long weekend at Hill Top. Note that they are on the Saturday and the Monday only this year.
-Runner.
Women
The open stroke event, sponsored by Decor Blitz had a chilly start which morphed into a beautiful Autumn day. Bec Jeffers has been enjoying some good golf in the month of May, reducing her handicap from 17-15.
Bec won A-grade with five pars on the front nine and another on the back nine for a 72 nett on count back from Terri Wangeman. B-grade was won by Lyn Fanning with 75 nett. Runner-up was Rosemary Hepworth with 77 nett on count back. Bev Roberts earned a credit for her 74 nett.
Nearest to the pins: third: Karen Ballantyne, sixth: Bec Jeffers; ninth and the jackpot: Niki Miller; 14th: Colleen Johns.
Nine hole event: Gail Meneilly scored 17 points to win the day, followed by Janet Leahy with 15 points.
Edna Starritt four-ball best-ball: The final was played on Friday, which saw Francie Mark and Sue Turnbull play Lois Rogers and Josie De Ieso on what was a perfect golfing day. Francie and Sue turned three up after Sue sank a nice putt for par on the ninth.
The momentum was with Francie and Sue, until Josie parred the 14th to win a hole back. Francie sealed the game on the 15th winning 4/3. Congratulations and commiserations were toasted back at the club house with the many lady members.
Coming up: The final of the Veterans event is being played between Terri Wangeman and Niki Miller on Thursday, May 30, time to be announced, come along and witness what should be an entertaining shoot-out.
Wednesday’s event: open women par, sponsored by GB Coffee and Tatura Post Office.
Nine hole event: back nine.
Advice: Success depends almost entirely on how effectively you learn to manage the game’s two ultimate adversaries: the course and yourself. -Jack Nicklaus.
MERRIGUM
The final round of the club championships was played at Merrigum on Saturday, with a lot of interest in the outcome of both grades.
Club captain Ash Sanders started the day as favourite for the club champion title after one outstanding round and two solid rounds of 79, 80 and 74.
While he was a long way back, the most likely challenger to Ash was James Campbell. Jimmy had a poor start to the championships, but because of that had the greatest room for improvement in the three best rounds of four format.
While he made up ten shots on Ash in the final round after both players shot 80, he was still five shots in arrears at the end of the day, meaning Ash won his second club championship with a three-round total of 233 and is a very worthy winner.
In B-grade the scratch championship was set up for an exciting finish, with Tommy Ladhams and John Fuller both tied before the start of the day. Tommy bettered his score by two, while John stayed where he was, meaning Tommy is the B-grade champion with 255. John was the B grade handicap winner with 212.
The A-grade handicap title was a close-run thing, with Andrew Wood improving his score by five shots, while Geoff Kirk improved his position by 10 shots. This gave Woody the win in the handicap section by the narrow margin of one shot from Kirky, with Woody having 212.
Congratulations to all the winners, they are well deserving of their wins, and for the rest of us, better luck next year.
Saturday’s winner of A-grade and the Privilege Cup was Geoff Kirk with a round of 83-13-70. It was the old last group syndrome biting those who finished early yet again.
The two carts in that group seemed to be teleporting around the course, one minute seemingly off in the distance and the next appearing on an adjacent fairway. When they did make it back it was heartbreak for the B-grade winner Tony Borrelli, who scored 90-19-71.
Some consolation for Tony was that he won the chook shed challenge with 11 points.
The A and B-grade runners-up respectively were Andrew Wood and Greg Hall, both with 72 nett on countbacks from ball winners Bill Bray and Tommy Ladhams respectively.
Ash Sanders took the only nearest the pin to go off, the jackpot 12th.
This week’s event is something very different, a three club event sponsored by Gary Eden. You might say a three club event is not that unusual, but the fact that there will be two holes on each green to choose from is. It probably won’t help those like the scribe who can’t putt, but it will be an interesting day. Thanks Gazbo.
