For nearly a decade, the club has worked to revive basketball for both youth and adults, providing opportunities for those who might not otherwise have had the chance to play.
Under the leadership of club secretary Michael Maskell, the sport has seen steady growth following the disbandment of the previous long-serving basketball committee.
However, Maskell has announced he will be stepping back from his role due to health reasons, leaving the future of Kyabram basketball uncertain.
“My goal has always been to regrow basketball in this community to the point where it falls under the Basketball Victoria umbrella, creating more opportunities for our children,” he said.
“It might seem strange to say, but I truly believe that my stepping away will allow this to happen — if enough willing parents step forward to steer the regrowth.”
The groundwork has already been laid for the sport’s continued success.
Playing singlets are available for teams across multiple age divisions, thanks to the support of local businesses.
Young referees have been trained, and neighbouring basketball associations have endorsed Kyabram’s readmission into Basketball Victoria.
Additionally, Kyabram is the envy of nearby towns, boasting a two-court basketball stadium — an asset that should be fully utilised for local players.
All that is left now is for a strong and committed group of parents willing to take on roles within a new basketball committee.
Basketball Victoria requires both sufficient teams and dedicated administrators to formally reinstate Kyabram into its structure.
“I am ready and willing to assist forward-thinking parents who want to keep basketball alive in Kyabram for our wider district,” Maskell said.
“If you think you’d like to join a committee — whether in a big or small role — please let me know, and I’ll share the good news.”
