Tungamah hosted Berrigan on Saturday. After a week off last week and a good week on the training track the Bears got off to a fast start.
Berrigan have been decimated by injuries, illness and player movement during the off season and were really struggling for numbers with a few players backing up from the Reserves.
The Bears weren’t in the mood to take it easy on their opponents however and quickly went about building a solid lead booting 6 goals in the first term.
They dominated out of the centre and when Berrigan did manage to move the ball forward their defence quickly rebounded out of there.
The second term was more of the same with the home side banging on another 9 goals to Berrigan’s nil to end the game as a contest by half time. Sean Johns, Josh Cheek, Sam Ferguson and Brad Wilson were running rampant through the midfield and giving the forwards some great looks.
Tom Lidgerwood and Ash Saunders were the main beneficiaries as they got on the end of the midfielder’s good work. The second half was much of the same, Saunders was put on ice and Wally Thomson was moved forward with immediate effect.
He kicked 2 goals and had a number of other shots showing he is more than capable in that deep forward role. Jim Irvine also played his best game for the year as he racked up a number of clearances and also delivered the ball forward with precision.
Berrigan ran the game out and fought all the way to the end, however Tungamah’s class came to the fore and they ended up strong winners by 183 points.

Reserves
Tungamah 18.17.125 defeated Berrigan 0.0.0
Whether it was the sowing season finishing up, a week off, or the most likely reason - the pending open bar after the game for Reserves day, the lunch time legends were up and about with record numbers at training and a full side consisting of no thirds or no-one over 40.
If Tungamah had of known the effect twos day was going to have, the club would have scheduled it for round 2.
Despite the full list the Reserves found themselves with limited rotations quickly as one week off wasn’t quite enough time for some of the aging bodies to recover. If a few of these blokes were thoroughbreds the scribe reckons they would have brought out the curtain.
Despite this, the boys went about piling on 9 goals in the first quarter. At this point the scribe believes the focus turned towards the perusing refreshments, as the quarter time address calling for the boys to stick to their structures was ignored on mass and they went about trying to set a new record for the most points scored by unrealistic snap shots.
Adding 9 behinds to the scoreboard. Jake Henderson’s bung knee had him displaying the aerial prowess of a brick before showering and treating himself to a few early rums.
Luckily T Irvine was back in, the only Irvine to not be relegated to the later game.
Whilst his game was good, his highlight was the quick return of serve whilst lining up for a shot on goal, responding to a bit of a jib with “get stuffed mate, I’m a legend at Berrigan”; then offering to sign the young punters boots.
With the backline players complaining of frost bite the team was thrown around. It was great to see Ada back on the field although not in the playing role the Bears had hoped instead taking on the running position.
Whilst the new grill is a solid improvement it has caused some speech impediment issues as players were easily able to understand their forward rotations but were left scratching their head at the counteracting backline rotation.
Christian Hore is under heavy federal investigation for trying to sell candy to a minor. Luckily the young Berrigan player was having none of it as Hore lost his footing coming a cropper.
Was later heard citing an Ed Sherran concert had taken place there causing the slippery turf conditions.
Banga was everywhere and the scribe thinks he even passed himself going the other way at one point.
The club need to check that the best players haven’t been written on in permanent marker as it seems to be the same suspects each week.
Cohen, Rangi, Jones, Thomson. Sorry for the lack of quality this week Bob, twos day has left the scribe dustier than a ceiling fan before a rental inspection.
Thirds
Tungamah 12.18.90 defeated Berrigan 8.4.52.
After a couple of weeks off due to byes the Bears were looking forward to a tough match against the Saints which is exactly what turned out.
The first 2 quarters were a real arm wrestle with the ball moving quickly from end to end.
The ball skills shown by both sides was a pleasure to watch as both sides were going hard at it with no backward steps taken.
Inaccurate kicking in front of goal by the Bears kept the game close but a rev up at half time by coach Costigan spurred the Bears into action and allowed the game to open up.
Jayden Arnold must have brought his own ball as it seemed to be in his hands a lot as he constantly cleared the ball from the centre kicking 5 goals himself.
The backline was solid all day and made the Saints work hard for their goals. It was probably the best team effort so far and sets the Bears up nicely for the upcoming games. Thanks to all helpers. Without you the games don’t go ahead.
Goals: Jayden Arnold 5, Lenny Lonergan 2, Tom Coffey, Jack Costigan, Billy Doyle, Dan O’Brien, Damien Walker 1.

Fourths
Tungamah 4.1.25 defeated by Berrigan 10.9.69.
The young Bears were a little nervous coming up against the undefeated, much larger side Berrigan. Berrigan‘s mid-field were a lot taller and moved the ball quickly forward from the first centre bounce. The backline were under the pump but fought hard applying some great pressure and intercepting many forward thrusts.
Tunga were still in the game right up until the last quarter when Berrigan kicked away.
The Bears never gave up until the final siren and showed some great passages of play throughout the game. Looking forward to getting one of the leaders back in a few weeks who has been greatly missed in the last couple of games.
Goals: L. O’Brien 2, B. Doyle 2.
Awards: Slater Goudie - Arnold’s $10 Awards, Xavier Chessells - Tungamah Pizza Award, Jett Bamford - Crusty Loaf, Luke O’Brien - Seniors $10 Award.
