Member association A-grade clubs recently voted 6-3 for the change.
Reigning premier Echuca, Moama and Fire Brigade were the three clubs not in favour of the change.
The competition has consisted of 45-over one-day games and 80-over two-day games in the past.
Kyabram Fire Brigade coach Jon Varcoe said, while his club voted against the change, he didn’t expect it to be too detrimental to the younger players under the new format.
‘‘Players are now going to get more chances with a game every week and our club will continue to play five or six younger players who’ll have roles every week with the future in mind.’’
Echuca’s Simon Maddox, who has led his club to three of the past four successive flags in the competition, believes the change could be detrimental to the younger players coming through the ranks.
‘‘Unless they are exceptional players, some may not even get to bat in some games,’’ Maddox said.
‘‘And others may find themselves in situations where they have to go out and be aggressive, which may not be good for their development.
‘‘Also it’s not going to help umpires who will have another 20 overs to handle every week.
‘‘A lot of these umpires are elderly and the extra overs are going to make it tougher for them.’’
