The interschool primary cricket, 25-over a side competition is an elimination tournament between public primary schools across the Riverina and the state, with the winner at each level progressing to the next round.
There is a friendly rivalry between the two geographically opposite public schools, as the schools have been taking part in the competition for several years .
On Monday, South School batted first.
South school batted well in spurts as North School took wickets at regular intervals.
Ned Wettenhall was outstanding for North, bowling in good partnerships with his fellow North teammates.
Wettenhall bowled well after a first over of extras to finish with figures of 4/4 off the next three overs and 4/10 for the game.
Taking wickets in consecutive deliveries, he was also on a hat trick at one point.
A strong fielding and bowling performance saw South bowled all out for a respectable 51 in the 25th over of their innings.
North School, however, made light work of this total.
After the end of the 10th over, North School finished on 59.
Both teams played out the remaining balls of the over when the chasing team passed 51.
In their innings, North School only lost one wicket and made the runs with 15 overs to spare as they won by nine wickets.
Ned finished on an unbeaten 27 runs, which included two fours and one six.
He was well-supported by opener Ollie Bull who finished not out on 12 which included a boundary.
Callan Leiper was South’s best performer, taking figures of 1/5 off his three overs.
Thanks, go to the umpires from Deni High School, Stuart Benger and Archie Beehag, and the teachers, including Luke Moodie and everyone else who helped make the match possible.
Deniliquin North Public School is now scheduled to play the winner of Berrigan Public School and Finley Public School next Friday, April 4.
If they win that game, they progress to the next round.
Also still to play off are Tocumwal Public School and Barooga Public School, with the winner meeting Corowa.
The winners of Corowa and Deni North’s next contests will then go head to head.
