The world championships will bring the best skiers from around the globe into Mulwala to compete for the chance to be World Champion.
Five countries are checked in with the USA, Canada, Australia and Belgium competing in the teams event and Sweden registering a skier in the individuals with entries closing at the end of February.
Individuals will compete on March 21 with swivel skiing, where skiers get five minutes to show off their skills to the judges, doubles, where one skier holds up another and they perform a five minute routine and jump where skiers get three jumps to do the best trick they can do - as big as possible.
Team training will take place from March 18 – 20 from 8am – 6pm with the teams event to be held on March 22 and 23.
This will see countries performing an hour long show where they are judged on many criteria from difficulty, to execution to production and costumes.
There is a lot of criteria and spectator appeal is a big one so hope a lot of locals come to cheer the Australians on.
Australian World Show Skiing coach and local waterskiing champion Pete O’Neill said this is a water-skiers dream event not to be missed and locals can expect to see an influx of international tourists in mid March.
“The best water skiers from around the world will head to Mulwala to show off their skills in action-packed performances,” Mr O’Neill said.
“Think theatre on water mixed with spectacular stunts with Ballet, Ski Jump, Wake board, Barefoot, Pyramids, Swivel Skiing and more to be on display.
“This is a ski show on a whole new level with the most spectacular tricks ever seen on water hosted by Mulwala Water Ski Club.
“There are over 150 competitors registered and the town will see them arrive on the March 14.
“The Australian team has 35 skiers, which is the maximum we are allowed to have, as well as 10 individuals competing in their divisions. Of the team, 21 of them are locals.”
Mr O’Neill said it was exciting for the event to be occurring in Mulwala next month after the world championships were cancelled just a week prior to starting in 2020, due to the start of the Covid-19 Pandemic restrictions being enforced.
“Since then there has only been one international competition that Australia did not compete in due to the Covid restrictions at the time when we needed to commit,” Mr O’Neill said.
“We did send some individuals and brought home a gold and a bronze medal. It was heartbreaking for our club to miss the worlds especially after having to go through the pain of the cancelled worlds, but this one means all the much more because of it.
Spectacular stunts with Ballet, Ski Jump, Wake board, Barefoot, Pyramids, Swivel Skiing and more will be on display at the world championships.
“The local show team has been busy behind the scenes working on the Ski Park and getting it right and ready for the world championships. There is still a lot to get done but it’s coming along nicely.
“Local sponsors have been fantastic and their help and support has been amazing.”
Mr O’Neill concluded that locals can expect to see a lot more people in the town and some incredible skiing so get down and check out the action.
“The welcoming ceremony is on March 19 at the Mulwala Water Ski Club from and the three days of competition cannot be missed,” Mr O’Neill said.
“We hope everyone comes out and helps Australia really thrive on our home lake, you won’t be disappointed.
“The things you see at the IWWF 2025 World Water Ski Show Championships will blow you away.”
