Saturday’s fixture at Cohuna Recreation Reserve wasn’t anticipated to provide much trouble for the Mowers on paper, but the winless Nondies made a good account of itself in Moama’s four-wicket win.
With Nondies batting first, it looked like Moama might run through its opposition after Xavier Wishart (0) and Sam O’Shea (15) were gone quickly, but Will Ringin’s stint in the middle helped anchor his side’s innings.
Ringin made a cagey 64 from 110 deliveries, only finding the boundary twice as the N-C total began to accumulate.
He found an effective partner in Will O’Shea (27) and the two put on 82 runs for the fifth wicket.
Matthew Robinson (16) as the next man in also did his part for the total, but after Ringin was dismissed, the innings faltered, Nondies losing their final five wickets for seven runs.
Michael Hill, was the pick of the bowling group for Moama, taking 4-32, while Anthony McMahon and Russell Stockdale each grabbed two wickets.
Despite the late collapse, an all-out 149 was a competitive total for Moama to chase.
It wasn’t all easy going for the Mowers, particularly early as the top three were quickly back in the sheds.
From 3-30, Anthony McMahon got things back on track and he was later joined by Russell Stockdale, the pair forming a 54-run partnership and both eventually going on to record half-centuries.
McMahon notched his first and was gone soon after for 51, but this only encouraged Stockdale to go on the attack as he finished the innings with a burst, reaching 54 not out from 43 balls as his side made it to the total six down.
Sam O’Shea (3-19) and Xavier Wishart (2-42) were the wicket-takers for Nondies.
Moama continues to hold second on the ladder over Rochester by quotient, the sides’ two-day match-up in the next fortnight likely to decide who gets choice of finals venue in what seems a likely finals pairing.
Nondies has one more opportunity to score a win this season, heading into a bye in the next round before hosting Rochester to conclude the regular season.
