Saturday’s game against the Deniliquin Rams at the Hardinge Street Oval was another super Tigers performance, with the side producing a solid four quarters to get across the line in a 4.4 (28) to 13.13 (91) victory.
It was another strong start that put Cobram in the box seat for the win, with a 28-to-zero first term getting it in the lead early.
This is the third game in a row the Tigers have shut out their opposition in the first quarter, with Numurkah and Tongala also unable to hit the scoreboard in the first term.
Cobram coach John Brunskill said it was always a difficult game on the road to Deniliquin.
“We knew we had to start well, Deniliquin threw a couple of players behind the ball early and there was a bit of a breeze," Brunskill said.
He explained that there was nothing in particular behind the consistent bright starts, with a relatively even competition meaning quick starts are always crucial.
“I think the boys are just ready to play, we know we’ve got to be ready to start,” he said.
Samuel Beasley, Adam De Cicco and Kyle Coates were named the three best on the day for Cobram, however Brunskill said any of the side could have been picked in the best.
“We’ve got commitment to our structures and good work rates, it was another team game, everyone played their role, the back six were fantastic, I know we have to pick six but it could have been any six,” he said.
Cobram will face another big test this weekend, when it takes on Barooga in Barooga.
The local rivals have been much improved of late, and coach Jackson Trengove has been in lethal goal-kicking form.
“It’s come around pretty quick, we played them seven weeks ago, and they will certainly be better than what they were, with Trengove back and a couple others,” Brunskill said.
The Hawks will be hungry to return to the winners list on the weekend after going down to Nathalia on Saturday.
A fast start to the Purples got them over the line in the end, with the visitors holding a 22-point lead at quarter-time.
A much-improved second term got the Hawks within striking distance, before a massive third term had Barooga one point behind at three quarter time.
However Nathalia was simply too good, kicking straight in the last quarter to run out 36-point victors.
Kyle Hore, Samuel Macheda and William Clark were named Barooga’s best on the day, with coach Jackson Trengove kicking five goals.
- In the Murray Netball League a-grade competition it was a disappointing day for both Barooga and Cobram.
The Hawks, suffered a tricky 23-50 loss at home to third-placed Nathalia, while Cobram suffered a heavy 80-16 defeat away to Deniliquin.
