“It was a wonderful tournament yet again,” Rhoanna from Wangaratta said of the sixth annual Joy Johnson Memorial event.
“It‘s wonderful to have you all here and I thank Yarrawonga Mulwala Golf Club Resort for hosting the tournament again.
“This event is special to win. Joy was a good friend of Mum.”
Major sponsor of the event, Lekeal Builders, was represented by employee and grandson of Joy’s, Jake Stevenson.
“On behalf of Lekeal and on behalf of the family, thank you all for coming,” he told the 78 players plus officials and supporters in the club’s Willow Room. “It gets better every year. Organisers do a power of work. I’m sure Joy would be looking down with a smile on her face.”
Despite early weather forecasts of some adverse conditions – especially for neighbouring areas – the 78 bowlers from 26 teams throughout Victoria bowled on the two beautiful greens in fine, sunny weather with just a little breeze compared to blustery conditions elsewhere.
With $10,000 total prize money and 18 state or ex state lawn bowlers, last Saturday and Sunday’s tournament was loaded with talent.
It was a happy organiser in Anne Miles who was a great mate of YMGCR ten-time club champion Joy. All went to clockwork. “It’s a good payday for some!” she said before announced prize earners and before she asked if there any wrong biases! Surprise – there were three responses!
The memorial event was hailed a big success and Anne acknowledged her band of helpers, sponsors and especially all the players from all over Victoria. It was a Bowls Australia ranking 3 event.
