Round seven of Shepparton District Tennis Association kicked off in hair-raising fashion as McEwen Reserve Gold and Red were knocked off by their opponents in the A1 division.
The former’s defeat was handed down by Lemnos, which ticked off its first win in the top flight this season by order of a 6-44 to 3-39 result.
Gold — on home court — had the wood over Lemnos in the early sparring and led 3-2 after the first five rubbers, but the visiting side then raced home with a wet sail to claim its first major points for the season.
Jennifer Smith was on song for Lemnos and was involved in three of her side’s winning rubbers, which included a 6-1 demo job of Helen Malcolm and Charlie Thomson alongside Will Kop.
At Shepparton North, McEwen Reserve Red was toppled in a battle of the competition’s top two.
North built its lead out to four points following the 6-46 to 3-34 victory, which followed a similar trend to the other Friday night fight.
Red kept pace for the first half of the match and sat level at three rubbers apiece heading into the final third, but North put the foot down to clinch all three remaining ties.
In the other A1 fixture, Central Park ousted Karramomus by four games to notch its second triumph of the campaign.
Central Park dropped the first two rubbers, but bounced back in a big way, going on to record a 5-42 to 4-38 victory in Saturday’s sweltering heat.
In A2 action, St Andrew’s pushed past first-ranked Karramomus 6-43 to 3-35, while Shepparton North edged out Murchison 5-39 to 4-33.
