It was the start of summer golf and although commencing play one hour earlier, the temperature on Tuesday rose quickly into the 30s, giving players a taste of the summer to come.
It was a stroke event with scores much higher than usual, indicating that perhaps some players may have struggled in the heat.
However, the heat did not deter Barbara Duke, who although absent for a few weeks and off a handicap of 22, returned to golf and produced a top performance.
She not only won B-grade but had the best nett score of 54 for the day and won the monthly medal. Veronica Ryan (26), after a countback from Thelma Wootton-Jones, was the B-grade runner-up with 61 nett.
Faye Glover (18) had a convincing win in A-grade with 56 nett. She also had the best scratch score of the day with 74.
Congratulations to relatively new member Terrie Giffin (33), who had her first competition win following a countback from Kerry McCormick and was named the winner of C-grade with 61 nett.
Ball recipients were Trudie Plumb 60, Thelma Wooton Jones 61, Kerrie McCormick 61 and Heather Sleeth 62. Nearest the pin on the first was won by Trudie Plumb with Faye Glover winning the jackpot on the 17th with her second shot.
Tuesday, November 28
Off a handicap of 29 saw Kathy Fanning win C-grade. She produced the best score for the day of 41 stableford points.
Thirty-six stableford points was the top score in A-grade achieved by both Heather Sleeth (18) and Kathy Bell (17), with Sleeth surviving the countback to take top spot.
Leonie McMaster-Smith (27) sneaked in by one point to win B-grade with 35 points over Veronica Ryan (26) who was runner-up with 34 points.
Ball recipients were Kathy Bell 36, Lyn Berry 34, Vanessa Laidlaw 33, Trudie Plumb 33. Rhonda Cox was the winner of nearest the pin on the first and also won the jackpot on the 17th with her second shot.

Seymour steadied and won nine shots over the next five ends to reduce the deficit, 29 shots to 19 on the twentieth end.
William’s team was able to hang on for an 11-shot win. Mary Greco’s team started slowly, but was able to level the scores on the sixth, ninth and 14th ends.
At lunch the scores were tied 10 shots all. With some good bowling from Seymour’s third, they took control of the game and won by 11 shots.
Bob Mason’s team after a horror start were down one shot to 16 after nine ends. They tried hard to get back into the game and were nine shots to 18 down after 15 ends.
Winning six shots over the last three ends cut the deficit again, but they could not catch their opponents.
Division two travelled to Seymour with two winning rinks and going down by three shots overall, 68 shots to 71. Phil Denham’s rink of Ian George, Jan MacFadyen and Graham King Jnr had a good win 29 shots to 19.
They found themselves four shots to 16 down after the first 10 ends. With some steady bowling they fought back and tied the score 17 shots all on the 16th end. The scores were level again on the 20th end, 19 shots all.
Denham and his team won the last five ends for a good comeback win. Jill Barrett and her team had a close game winning 23 shots to 21.
They led from the start of the game. After 13 ends their lead was 14 shots to nine. Seymour got within two shots, 14 shots to 12 on the 16th end.
Winning the next four ends gave Barrett’s team the lead 22 shots to 12 after 20 ends.
Seymour won the next four ends to be within one shot, 22 shots to 21 on the 24th end. Winning the last end gave Barrett and her team a two-shot victory.
Graeme Woodcock’s rink lost 16 shots to 31. They started well and lead early only to be caught on the nineth end, eight shots all.
Seymour was able to control the game after this, leading 21 shots to 10 on the 16th end and winning by 15 shots at the end of the game.
Division three was host to Nagambie and won by two shots overall, 62 shots to 60.
Darryl Gade’s rink won 24 shots to 21. Nagambie bowled better in the first half of the game and led 19 shots to 14 on the 20th end.
Gade was able to steady his team over the last five ends winning four of the last five ends. Winning five shots on the 23rd end put them in front 22 shots to 19. They were able to hang on for a 3 shot win.
Des Campbell and his team also won by three shots, 19 shots to 16. After a strong start they led 13 shots to four on the 10th end.
Nagambie won the next four ends to reduce the deficit to four shots, 13 shots to 9 after 14 ends. Once again Campbell and his team held a good lead, 17 shots to 10 after 19 ends, only to have it reduced again, 17 shots to 15 on the 22nd end.
Winning two of the last three ends saw them win the game by three shots.
Wayne Chambers and his team lost 19 shots to 23. Both teams started well with scores level three all on the third end, five all on the seventh end and six all on the nineth end.
Then Nagambie was able to control the game winning 10 of the next 11 ends to lead 23 shots to seven on the 20th end.
Chambers and his team did not give up and they won the last five ends to close the gap to four shots.
Division five played Tatura Hill Top, losing all rinks in very close games and going down by seven shots, 51 shots to 58.
Geoff Hocking lost 13 shots to 14. The scores were tied four shots all on the sixth end and on the 13th end Hocking and his team led 10 shots to six.

John Fanning’s rink lost 18 shots to 20. After a strong start Fanning and his team led 14 shots to seven after 11 ends.
Tat Hill Top then took the lead 17 shots to 14 after 15 ends. Fanning and his team steadied and led 18 to 17 on the 18th end.
They could not win another end and went down by three shots. Garry Salomon’s rink lost 20 shots to 24. Salomon and his team led seven shots to 0 after six ends.
Tat Hill Top slowly and surely fought their way back into the game and on the 17th end the scores were level, 17 shots all. Salomon and his team took the lead again only to lose five shots on the second last end to be behind again and to go down by four shots.
Weekend Pennant, round nine, December 9
Kyabram had great performances in Division one, two and five in round nine.
Division one kept second place on the ladder and consolidated its position in the four at the Christmas break with a solid win 14-4 over Euroa.
Division two shocked an unsuspecting Nagambie at home winning 18-0.
Division five had a convincing win over Colbinabbin 14-2 which pushed them into second place. Division three wasn’t able to cog together and lost 4-14 to Shepparton Golf.
Division one won away at Euroa. Euroa was fresh from toppling ladder leaders Shepparton Golf and was full of confidence to beat Kyabram.
Despite this confidence they were beaten 91-81. Josh Cartwright, with strong support from Rob Anset, Darren Boswood and Greg Shilling accounted for a good side skipped by Andy Hueston 27-14.
This was a classy win that promises more great performances after the break. David Cartwright with the inclusion of John Hausler won a tight game 24 20. Rob George’s team kept Ken Sutcliffe busy all day and only just went down 15-17.
George bowled very well himself we are reliably informed. Brent was involved in a scorathon with Tony Kingma.
When the dust settled, they were behind 30-35. After the break Division one plays Mooroopna at home.
Division two let the bombs fly at the hanger and Nagambie were the recipients.
They won by a massive 46 shots 100-54. Bob Mason although last finished, led the way with a resounding 28-11 win over Des Fothergill.
They leapt to a 10-0 lead early and never looked back, including winning eight of the last nine ends.
Noel Reddrop’s team was at its miserly best. They only dropped 10 ones and a two for the whole day and won well 24-12. Phil Denham’s team continued its good form.
They held sway all day over good opposition and won 25-16. Des Campbell’s team won 23-15 in a game that didn’t reach any great heights but a good solid win just the same.
Division two is now fourth on the ladder. In this form is starting to loom as a threat to the other teams in the four. Division two play Hilltop/Tatura after the break.
Division three travelled to Shepparton Golf and found the opposition a bit good from them across the board.
Jill Barrett and her team were well in control at the 17th leading 21-10. From there they only scored on one end but were able to hang on to win 25-21.
Rob Sceney’s rink was able to gain dominance over the last seven ends losing only one shot, to win by seven shots 25-18.
Noel Thomson‘s team clung on for most of the day. They led 16-14 on the 19th end. After that they only scored once and lost 18-25.
Wayne Chamber’s team found Frankie Ivak and his team too hard to handle and went down 16-33. Division three plays Avenel at home after the Christmas break.
Division five produced the type of form it has promised for a while. John Fanning led his team of Kayla Jackson, Garry Salomon and Murray Boswood to a convincing 25-16 victory.
Scoring 11 shots over ends 11-13 blew the game open. From there they controlled the game and won comfortably. Geoff Hocking’s team was looking down the barrel after the 19th end. They were down 17-21. They scored a three and a two on the last two ends to win 22-21 in a grand fighting effort.
Ray Harrison’s team was in a world of hurt on the 16th end trailing 11-19.
The team showed great fight to drag it back to 17-21 and give its side an overall win over a good side.
Their overall win 64-58 was well deserved. Division five plays Seymour VRI away after the break.
VALLEY VIEW GOLF MEN
We start this week’s report with news from Cape Schanck Golf Club down on the Mornington Peninsula where Daryl and Wil Harrison took out the National Four Ball Matchplay earlier in the week.
After progressing through the semi-final in the morning with a win over the Tasmanian team, Wil and Daryl took out a tense final against the NSW team with a 2-up margin in a great effort given they were both giving up shots to their opponent who were off 27 and 35 handicaps.
For their trouble Daryl and Wil each won $500 golf vouchers and an assortment of other golfing apparel.
It could have been an even bigger day with Wil going within a metre and half of an ace on one of the par threes for which the prize was $75,000 cash or choice of either of two motor vehicles of similar value.
There was further good news for Valley View as Daryl, Wil and Mick Coyne also took out the team’s event for the best aggregate score through the qualifying rounds which were played as a stableford format.
For that achievement they won a golf buggy for their home club.
Congratulations to Wil, Daryl and Mick on their success.
To the second round of the Summer Cup on Saturday and Jeff “Cobba” Carnie has shot to the Summer Cup lead after a red-hot round of 42 points at the weekend.
Carnie took out B-grade by the resounding margin of five shots from runner-up Craig Larcombe who finished with 37 points.
It was a much closer affair in A-grade with Mick Gallivan getting across the line with 39 points from Paul Kuiper and Bud Thorsen who both posted rounds of 38 points before the countback for runner-up went Paul’s way.
Another one-shot margin in the ladies’ comp with Julie Neale prevailing with 38 points from Tracey Wade with 37.
Ball comp winners were Bud Thorsen (38 points), Kelly Cheong (37), Gordon Mackay (36), Peter Sherman (36), Peter Noble (36) and Marlene Topp (35).
Nearest the pin trophies were won by Mick Gallivan (A-grade 3rd), Craig Larcombe (B-grade 3rd and 12th), Helen Emery (12th) and Mick Coyne (15th).
Just the one grade on Tuesday with David Collins the winner with 39 points from Ron Dixon (38 points).
Peter Mangan (37 points), John Burrows (35) and Graeme Harrison (35) won balls, while Pooch McHale won the nearest the pin on the third on the way to a birdie, and David Collins add the voucher on the 15th to his winner’s trophy.

VALLEY VIEW LADIES GOLF
Valley View’s Summer 4Ball Pennant team finished the season as runners-up.
The 3½ to 1½ result in favour of Numurkah at Numurkah does not reflect the closeness of the matches. Only one match finished early.
Three matches finished on the 17th and 18th holes and the final match was called in when it was a square after 16 holes, as the final result was a forgone conclusion.
Congratulations to the 14 players who took part in Summer Pennant.
Sharon Harrison was our very generous sponsor last Wednesday and due to her efforts players were greeted by a clubhouse decorated for Christmas and ready for our Christmas lunch.
The stableford round saw some high scores in both grades. Julie Neale was the winner in A-grade with a well above par 39 points, and Bev Lyon had a strong back nine to record 34 points to be runner-up.
In B-grade, Marlene Topp also had 39 points to win from Wendy Cox with 37 points.
Tracey Wade over came the inconvenience of having to dash home to collect her forgotten golf clubs at the start of play, to claim nearest the pin and the mystery trophy.
VALLEY VIEW BOWLS
Midweek
The beginning of the second round match up against Deni RSL was only slightly better for us than our first up meeting.
Deni currently in third place displayed consistency and precision, outclassing two of our Valley View teams and claiming the win 92 shots to 33.
Helen Emery skipped for Marlene Topp, Rod Donohue and Rae Hann and proved to be a worthy opponent for C. Taylor’s rink. Although down on the sixth end when Deni picked six shots and led eight shots to three.
The Valley View team showed it wasn’t giving up without a fight, picking up 13 shots to two over the next nine ends to hold a six-shot lead of 16 to 10 on the 15th end.
The Deni team turned the tables in the six remaining ends in its favour out scoring the Valley View team with 11 to three shots and claim the win by three shots 21 to 19.
Bev Lyon’s team of Marilyn West, Nance Saunders and Julie Neale weren’t in the match against J. Tontas team only having six shots to 24 on the 13th end and managing to pick up only three more shots to 10 over the remaining eight ends for the win to Deni 34 to nine.
The team skipped by Leanne Busch with Jenni Bauerle, Kevin Broadhurst and Helen Ward also found T. Tontas team too consistent, picking three shots to 25 by the 13th end and managing two to 12 more over the next eight ends to go down 37 to five.
Next match is against Moama Steamers at Moama who currently sit in second place.
Good bowling.
Saturday, December 9
Playing Tongala at home had mixed results for the Valley View team with one win, one square and a loss. With the end result of a win to Tongala 68 to 52.
Ken Hasties team of Rob Varcoe, Tim Roberts-Skevington and Geoff Beamish had a tough match against E. Hosking’s team, not managing to have a score on the board until the 17th end where the picked up one shot and Tongala already having 28.
With four ends to play the Valley View picked up two shots on the 18th and Tongala three more shots in the remaining three ends. Going down three to 31.
Rod Donohue’s team of Kevin Broadhurst, Helen Ward and Alf Soden combined well against B. Visiarinis team, with the scores level after 13 ends the Valley View team held some big scoring shots of a four and two fives over the next four ends to hold a handy lead of 23 to 13.
Over the remaining four ends Valley View picked up five shots to three to run away winners 28 to 16.
Graeme Topp’s rinks again playing one short with Leanne Busch third, no second, and Dave Clavell lead put up a great effort to square the match against T. Booth and team.
Although only one the difference in Tongala’s favour of 13 to 12 on the 13th end and drawing level on the 16th end of 15 each, Valley View only held one shot to Tongala’s six over the next four ends.
ongala opened up a lead of five shots by the 20th end. Playing the last end Graeme’s team bowled well to hold onto a fantastic five shots to end the match level.
Great match and good bowling for next weeks match at Rich River.
KY PARKLAND GOLF

Golfer of the year was announced with Price collecting the honours. Price also won the most birdies made during the year with 25.

MERRIGUM GOLF CLUB
The third round of the summer four-ball was played at Merrigum on Saturday. The event was 4BBB par and there were some outstanding scores returned and likely some serious work for the handicapper to do.
Tommy Ladhams and Cory Berghofer were a last minute pairing and put together a sensational winning score of +11. Berghofer gave Ladhams all the credit in his speech, however without seeing the card, the scribe suspects Berghofer had a fair part in it too.
He did have one very close nearest the pin to his name, the jackpot 12th, as well as another which was subsequently beaten, so he did have his eye in too.
Ladhams was later announced as the “Golfer of the Year” at presentation night, so his good form is extending into the new season.
The unlucky runners-up were another last minute pairing who finished with +9. Geoff Kirk and Bill Johnson teamed really well together and would have been well satisfied with their chances, however the winners were just that much better.
Next best were Tony Borrelli and Simon Doherty with +8. The only other nearest the pin to go off was Simon Doherty on the ninth. The chook shed challenge was a tie again and jackpots to a healthy amount next Saturday.
Good numbers are still turning up to Thursday evening’s twilight competition, which is pleasing to see. Michael Doherty notched another win with a round of 46-9-37.
Along with the rest of the Doherty clan, he is putting himself forward as a challenger for the overall honours at the end of the season.
He also picked up the jackpot for nearest the pin in the ninth. Berghofer gave Michael Doherty a run for his money however, finishing with 42-4.5-37.5.
Greg Hall picked up the other nearest the pin on the 14th, while Simon Doherty won least putts with 16 on a countback from brother Craig and James Campbell. The two point cut was 40.5.
This coming Saturday’s event is stableford.
MERRIGUM BOWLS CLUB
This week our Tuesday pennant team was the only winner.
They beat Seymour by 10 shots down at Seymour, while on Saturday the Fives lost to Murchison at home and the Sevens lost to Eildon at Eildon.
Carol Firmer, Colin Capes, Noreen Earl and John Bailey played I. Ridd and won by 15 shots.
The game see-sawed over the first four ends, but then Merrigum scored six shots on the next two ends to set up a lead they slowly increased over the remaining ends. This rink is slowly becoming the anchor for the team.
David Pettifer, Alan Dennis, Maureen Shepherd and Jim Arthur drew T. Lee and got home by two shots.
They played very well up to end 14 where they had a very comfortable lead of 13 shots.
Sadly, over the next seven ends they were outscored by 13 shots to two.
The game was tied up at 22 all after 19 ends. To their credit they picked up singles on the last two ends to score a narrow win.
In the third game Greg Pell, Neil Gardiner, Carmen Quattrocchi and Ken Phillips played J. McCarthy and lost by seven shots.
They began very slowly and were 11 shots down after 13 ends and it looked very shaky for the overall win.
However, after smoko they pick up their game, but had given too much start and just couldn’t catch their opponents.
The Fives played Murchison and lost by 14 shots. Greg Pell, Neil Gardiner, Barry Parsons and Carmen Quattrocchi played Geoff Higgins and won by one shot.
The game ebbed and flowed all day and fittingly the scores were level with just one end to play.
When the last bowl came to rest Merrigum held one shot and claimed the win. This was a good effort by the Merrigum boys and they all did just enough to get the win.
Joe Chant, Alan Dennis, Glen Denham and Jim Arthur met Tony Martin and lost by six shots. Merrigum was nine shots down, but picked up a five on the last end before smoko to cut the difference to four shots.
However, hard they tried they could never manage to get the lead and lost the game.
This wasn’t a very high standard game and players on both sides struggled. I must mention Jim Arthur’s leading, because without that the losing margin would have been far greater. Well done Jim.
In the last game David Pettifer, Colin Capes, Peter Warburton and Graeme Hubble played Wayne Brown and lost by nine shots.
They began the game with a huge seven-shot result on end one and perhaps they may have become over confident.
To their credit the Murch combination never gave in and led by five shots at the conclusion of end seven.
With one end to go they had increased this lead to 10 shots. Merrigum managed to pick up one on the last end to lose by nine shots.
The Murch skipper must have given a huge sigh of relief with this win. His rink has been in the doldrums for quite a while.
The Sevens travelled to Eildon and didn’t win a rink. I only have the one card and surely Mark Parson’s rink must soon win a game.
Mark Parsons, Emily Parsons, Alicia Parsons and John Bailey played C. Fox and once again lost by a solitary shot.
Their card reveals that they played great bowls up until the “championship” ends where they led by 13 shots.
I can’ tell our readers how it happened, but they didn’t get a shot over these last five ends, while Eildon picked up 14 shots.
In the last game John Firmer’s rink was soundly beaten.
Next Saturday night is the Christmas dinner so please be there by 6.30pm.
All members are urged to keep Friday, December 17 free as we have to carry out urgent renovations on the green and we will all hands on deck.
Try to be there by 8am as there are lots of little jobs to be done as well as the major maintenance.
