Young gun Archie Watt pulled a hamstring in the second quarter of the game against South Bendigo at Elmore and is in doubt for the opening GVL round on Saturday week in a night game against Euroa.
But that was the only negative for the Bombers in a lively display in which they were on target around goals and won by six or seven goals against a team that played some good football as well.
Morrison Medallist Mick Mattingly starred on ball and Charlie Barnett and Tom Holman were targets up forward.
Barnett backed himself at contests and was impressive hitting the scoreboard while Holman kick-started the Bombers with three first-quarter goals.
Lancaster recruit Zac Cerrone also did some positive work up forward.
Moama recruit Jack Russell was also lively again and is efficient at ground level.
Aidan Robinson also battled manfully against a much taller opponent in the ruck and younger players in Oscar Dixon and Nic Jephson showed their skills at times.
Jephson has been battling glandular fever but is clear to play the season with the Bombers.
Senior players who didn’t play were skipper Zac Norris who pulled up sore from a best on ground performance against Golden Square the previous week, gun backman Brad Whitford who is suffering lingering achilles problems and Mooroopna recruit Coby McCarthy who is overcoming a groin injury.
Whitford and McCarthy face a battle to be ready for round one but Norris will play.
Tongala recruit Mitch Gugliotti also has injury problems and may be in doubt for the opening round.
Co-coach Corey Carver said he was happy with his charges’ efforts on the day and was now focusing on round one.
