Sitting two points clear on top of the ladder, the Lakers are a perfect eight wins from eight starts in 2022, with their immense offensive firepower and tenacious defence working in perfect harmony.
This scintillating form was best shown in their last outing against Undera, where they put on a remarkable 92 scores in wet weather conditions to come away with a percentage-boosting 66-goal triumphs.
With a clash against 12th-placed Girgarre on the agenda this weekend, Nagambie will be hoping to keep on flexing its muscles and maintain its stranglehold on top spot.
Lakers coach Katie Sullivan said spirits were high heading into the bye week.
“The club is just a really good place to be at the moment,” Sullivan said.
“We’ll just do a bit of our own fitness over the break and just enjoy a nice long weekend before jumping into an exciting back end of the season.”
The second half of the season is set to really challenge the in-form Lakers, with marquee match-ups against fellow top-three sides Shepparton East and Tallygaroopna in the run home set to define their campaign.
Sullivan said her team was incredibly excited to challenge itself against the competition’s best in the lead-up to finals.
“(Having those tough games to finish) is the best way to do it, I think. In past seasons we have come into finals with a bit of a softer run, so this year is a bit different,” she said.
“Coming up against Shepp East and Tally, they are very exciting challenges for us and will tune us up nicely heading into the business end of the season.”
Avenel, on the other hand, will just be hoping to put in a competitive performance as it travels to Central Park Recreation Reserve to face an undefeated Shepparton East.
Coming off a tight loss to Longwood in the lead-up to the Queens Birthday bye, it has been a tough start for the Swans, only notching up two wins from their eight matches.
But with a number of winnable matches to come after this clash with the Eagles, Avenel fans will be hoping for a strong finish to the year as its young team continues to develop.
