Merrigum pulled off an eye-catching win over Stanhope, while Shepparton East and Avenel walked away with classy victories over fellow challengers.
With an eye to this weekend’s round two matches, Girgarre is on a six-day back-up and travels to take on Tallygaroopna.
The Roos celebrated the club’s centenary last Sunday but suffered a 27-point defeat at the hands of rival Lancaster.
Recruit Jarrod Kellock was outstanding for Girgarre, while playing coach Damian Cupido booted four goals.
Cupido, a former AFL star, told the Kyabram Free Press that his side would look to focus on the basics ahead of this weekend’s clash against Tallygaroopna.
“Our game is based around effort, so as long as there is effort, everything else that we’ve worked on will fall into place,” he said.
“If there is no effort with how we go about it then everything will fall over.
“As long as we bring our effort, our structures and everything else will hold.
“We believe that our brand of footy can stand up in finals, so it’s just a matter of getting to that level where we need to be at and attacking this week against Tallygaroopna and getting a win on the board.”
Around the grounds, Shepparton East coach Rob Osborne will be busy planning how his outfit can stop Violet Town forward maestro Josh Mellington.
The Eagles welcome the Towners to Central Park Reserve in what will shape up to be an exciting contest.
The hosts have half-a-dozen walk-in starters missing but their tails will be up following a five-goal win over Dookie United in round one.
Shepparton East has planned its premiership reunions for this weekend and suspects a large crowd will be in attendance.
Meanwhile, Longwood was left severely undermanned last weekend in its loss to Violet Town.
The Redlegs had 13 senior players miss the game but are hopeful they can return to the line-up for Saturday’s clash against Undera.
Dookie United faces a tough opponent in Avenel, while Rushworth hits the road to take on Lancaster.
Lastly, all eyes will be on Murchison-Toolamba and its home match against Stanhope.
The Grasshoppers get the chance to move 2-0, while the Lions will be hell-bent on claiming their first win.
