As the saying goes, you don’t win a premiership in round one.
This is a mindset Avenel is taking into its return to the court this year, but the slow and steady build doesn’t mean the Swans aren’t excited about their potential to rise up the ladder this year.
Newly-minted co-coach Bree D’Andrea, who joins returning coach Jacinta Jamison in the top job, said signs looked promising seven weeks out from the season opener.
“We’re certainly sitting in the position we planned to,” D’Andrea said.
“We’re taking each week as it comes, but it’s very exciting and it’s looking like we will be quite competitive.”
Giving D’Andrea reason to be optimistic has been a strong recruiting period — to be kept under wraps until pre-season matches kick-off — though one household name has been dropped with goal shooter Tegan Sidebottom returning to the club “as fit as ever”.
“We’ve got a versatile side and it’s been a solid pre-season, but it’s a long build-up to the start of the season,” D’Andrea said.
“The aim is to be competitive week in and week out, and I think we have strength in all our positions, so I’m quietly confident.”
