Girgarre’s aspirations of pushing for a finals berth in 2025 got off to a rocky start as they were put to the sword by the reigning Kyabram District League premier Murchison-Toolamba in round one.
A lack of attacking rhythm pulled Girgarre undone as the Grasshoppers were able to run over them on both ends of the field.
While a two-goal opening quarter isn’t optimal, it proved to be one of the more fruitful periods of play for the Kangaroos, as Murchison-Toolamba nailed five goals in the same time.
The Grasshoppers continued their blistering pace, drilling another 3.4 in the second quarter while holding the Kangaroos to just 1.1, the deficit increasing to 37 at half-time.
Whatever momentum Girgarre had in the first half came to a halt as the side managed just three behinds in the third quarter while the Grasshoppers continued to dominate the contest, kicking 7.4.
As the Kangaroos continued to toil, they found solace in a pair of goals in the final frame but paled in comparison to the sheer domination put on by Murchison-Toolamba who bagged 8.3 to well and truly bury Girgarre.
The final score was Girgarre 5.5 (35) to Murchison-Toolamba 22.15 (147).
The 122-point defeat gives the Kangaroos a clear indication of their distance from the top echelon of the KDL, but will have a shot at getting their season under way when they return home to face Merrigum in round two.
