The Magpies’ leader is set to become just the second player to lead the club onto the field in a senior Goulburn Valley League grand final this century.
With the Magpies last strutting their stuff on grand final day in 2005, Varley will be aiming to win the ultimate prize — something his club has done just twice.
“It’s pretty amazing,” Varley said after Euroa’s preliminary final win over Mansfield.
“I’m a bit speechless at the moment, it’s fantastic for all of our town.
“It’s a shame co-captain Jacob Gleeson can’t be with us due to injury, but it’s awesome to be in the final and we’re privileged to be in this position.”
Varley outlined how much the club meant to him, with the running defender keen to represent the town on the big stage.
“We’ve got a really core group that have stuck with us now for a long time,” he said.
“We’ve had a lot of years as a club where we haven’t been successful, so it’s pretty special that the group that sort of started in juniors and have played a fair bit of senior footy together can now convert some rewards.”
A small but passionate football town, Euroa’s community is certain to rally behind its troops on Sunday.
And Varley’s Magpies will need all the support they can get.
Echuca, the benchmark team all year, stands in the way of Euroa clinching a memorable drought-breaking win.
Varley said his side had taken plenty away from when the two last met in finals a fortnight ago, a game Echuca won with ease.
“Echuca are a quality outfit and we just couldn’t get the game on our terms last time out,” he said.
“We’ve learnt a fair bit from it and hopefully after today (Sunday) it was a bit different again.
“We’re looking forward to throwing everything at them.”
