The Cats dominated possession but struggled to convert opportunities against an United outfit that came to Mooroopna Recreation Reserve with nothing to lose.
For the second straight week in a row, Mooroopna’s defenders — most noticeably best afield performers Lachie Devine and Dom Gugliotti — stood tall in the 14.12 (96) to 5.7 (37) triumph.
The Dees were spirited in the opening half of the round three clash.
The visitors brought the heat in the first term but Mooroopna was able to break the game open in the second quarter.
Oscar Ryan and Joel Serra were the Dees’ top performers in the loss that keeps United winless to start 2022.
Cats forward Chris Nield booted three goals in a contest where Mooroopna had 10 different goal kickers.
“It was a spirited start to the match but we were able to get our noses in front in the second term and maintained that in the third,” Mooroopna coach John Lamont said after the match.
“That was off the back of winning the clearances, United were undermanned without a genuine ruckman but they were impressive around the stoppages.
“The quality from our defensive rebound 50s was high which gave us plenty of time in the forward half. I would have liked to generate more scoring opportunities for the number of inside 50s in that last quarter, but all in all we came into a game we were expected to win and we have.
“It’s a positive position (undefeated) to be in that’s for sure.”
The match was soured for the Cats with talented ruckman Keelin Betson and young defender Oscar Lear sustaining injuries during the match.
Lamont said he was unsure about the severity of both injuries, but did reveal Lear would need to undergo scans.
“We were down a couple in the final quarter,” Lamont said.
“I’m not sure yet, we just didn’t want to take a risk with them.”
