The Bombers got the better of the Bulldogs in the low-scoring affair, with the final result a 4.12.36 to 6.11.47 win to Kyabram at Tatura.
It was a close game throughout the contest with neither side able to kick clear.
Breezy conditions did not make it easy for the two sides, with missed chances a plenty, and a scrappy contest entertaining supporters.
The third term, in which Tatura kicked just four behinds and no goals, was ultimately the difference between the two sides, in a game either side could have won.
Kyabram coach Paul Newman said it was good to get the first win on the board for the year, with a strong defensive performance the catalyst for the victory.
“Defensively we were pretty good for the most part of the game, both teams probably just let themselves down a bit in attack and when the ball was in hand, it was a pretty scrappy sort of a contest,” he said.
“It was probably not a great endorsement of GV (Goulburn Valley) footy but it was good just to get out of there with the four points in the end.”
Newman said that it was pretty untidy in general play from both teams, however he emphasised how pleased he was with the defensive side of the Bombers’ performance.
Zac Keogh had a good day out for the Bombers as did Lachlan Smith and Kyle Mueller, with Newman praising their efforts.
“Zac Keogh was pretty dominant all game, he is probably one of very few four quarter performers we had,” he said.
“Lachy (Smith) had a really good second half and just stood up when it counted and Kyle Mueller was lively all day.”
Newman said Mueller had plenty of opportunities to hit the scoreboard and despite not having the greatest delivery he worked really hard.
“Everyone sort of did their bit at different stages but there was probably only a couple with really good four quarter performances,” he said.
The win sees Kyabram start the season in ideal fashion and Newman said a round one win was always a good place to start.
“It shows we have a little bit of work to do but it’s good to bank the four points in an ugly game like that,” he said.
“You’ve got to win ugly sometimes and as I said I was really pleased with the way we defended the ground and kept them to four goals.
“It’s something to build on, we just look forward to improving as the year goes on.”
The win sees Kyabram sit sixth on the ladder after one game, with a big Friday night home game coming up against Rochester this week.
Rochester will have something to prove after a loss to Echuca and should provide a good early test for the Bombers.
