Round 12 of the division one competition took place on Saturday afternoon with a scintillating contest between Velvet Tigers and Shepparton Lawn Average Joes the highlight of the final round of the home-and-away season.
After two consecutive losses, Average Joes got off to the perfect start thanks to Zach Ranson, who won the first set at Nathalia Lawn Tennis Club 1-8.
Velvet Tigers fought back hard and took a 3-2 set lead as the match approached the halfway mark.
The match continued in a to-and-fro fashion as the two sides were desperate to carry some form into finals.
Velvet Tigers pair Ned Nihill and Laura Booth claimed the final set of the match 8-7, however it wasn’t enough as the visitors ran out victors.
The scoreline finished 6-76 to 6-82 in Average Joes’ favour.
In the other division one match, Numurkah Warriors trumped Shepparton Lawn The Valley in another tight encounter.
The Warriors held sway of the contest early, leading four sets to one on their home court, before The Valley fought back late.
Numurkah was able to stave off its opponents and won the match 7-84 to 5-66.
The first round of finals will begin this weekend, with first-placed Average Joes looking to repeat Saturday’s effort against fourth-placed Velvet Tigers when the two teams meet again in a semi-final.
Second-placed The Valley and third-placed Warriors will resume hostilities when the two teams play each other in the second semi-final.
Both finals will be played at Cobram Lawn Tennis Club on Saturday.
In division two, Numurkah Raiders, Shepparton Lawn Blues, Nathalia, Kyabram Bombers and McEwen Reserve all recorded victories in round 15.
Next weekend McEwen Reserve will take on Tatura Monsoons and Kyabram Bombers will play Euroa Blue in the two semi-final clashes.
