Girgarre were seemingly unstoppable throughout the contest, piling on 71 goals over four quarters to not just sink the Grasshoppers, but walk them off the court.
The final score was 70-20.
Shockingly, the grand victory leaves the Kangaroos in second position behind Shepparton East, who similarly notched a mammoth win over Undera.
Girgarre coach Hollie Nelson had nothing but praise for her side, who delivered a strong whole court performance across the entire match.
“We were happy to come out strong, we’ve had a big preseason, so it was a nice reward for effort early on,” she said.
“Our systems and the girls combinations up and down the court were great, everything went according to plan.
“Credit to us, we continued to push that lead through the whole game and didn’t let up, we wanted to string together four great quarters.
“As coaches we had nothing but praise for the girls and their performance, it was very positive the whole game.”
Nelson outlined some key performers for the contest but said that while a strong win is great, there is still plenty of room for improvement for the rest of the season.
“Jacqui Gahan and Jemma Wright were great in front of goal and was nice to see their teamwork was strong, and I think there are exciting things to come from them,” she said.
“For Jemma and Jacqui to shoot 70 goals between them was an outstanding achievement.
“Allana Adams was our best on court, her presence throughout the whole court was wonderful.
“We don’t want to get too far ahead of ourselves, we know there is a strong competition ahead of us in the coming weeks so we still want to fine tune our systems, there is still a lot of work to be done.
“Round one is just the beginning, we would like to continue to keep building every week.”
While fellow 2024 grand finalist Lancaster also claimed an impressive victory over Merrigum, it was to a lesser extent to the Kangaroos.
The Wombats finished 16 goals ahead of the Bulldogs in a 43-27 finish, which has put them comfortably in fourth position after round one.
Stanhope wasn’t able to get it done against Tallygaroopna in the opening fixture, falling short to the Redlegs by nine goals, finishing 27-36.
This lands Stanhope on the outside of the extremely early finals picture, but a meeting with the 11th placed Grasshoppers in round two should see the Lions get on the board.
