Kids aged 5-10 have an opportunity to get their start in hockey after the Hookin2Hockey program kicked off in Echuca this week.

The nine-week program, instituted by Hockey Australia, serves as an introduction to the sport for juniors, getting them on their way in the sport through games and drills, building a platform to join competitive play in later years.
“It's done in a fun way of learning skills and playing games together before you step into the juniors, which is the competitive side,” EMHC secretary Bec Webb said.
Echuca Moama Hockey Club held its first Hookin2Hockey session on Thursday, February 20, at Echuca College.

Nine participants were in attendance for the first session, guided by experienced coaches and junior association members.
“We've got Amy (Coshan) who's a great asset,” Webb said.
“She's previously worked with Hockey Victoria and then we actually have a couple of our juniors out there who step up and assist with the kids.”
Australian masters representative Ian Wright was also on hand for the session.
The program will continue to run on Thursdays for the next eight weeks, up until April 17 from 4.30 to 5.30pm.

The first session is free and equipment is provided, with the full program, including insurance, costing $89.
After honing their skills with the program, juniors in the top end of the age bracket can transition into Echuca Moama’s junior squad in the Goulburn Valley Hockey Association.
Competition in the GVHA is set to begin on April 26, and Echuca Moama will begin training on Thursday, March 20.
The senior women’s side won the 2024 championship in an undefeated season and will be looking to continue its momentum into 2025, while the men’s A- and B-grade side’s will be looking to improve on a semi-final exit last season.
