Despite the Gators starting the better of the two teams and building an eight-point lead at quarter-time, the Shepparton outfit fell away in the second and fourth quarters to lose 64-88.
The Gators lost the second quarter 9-25 and the final quarter 21-34, which didn't help their cause.
While Matt Brasser, who was considered a threat before the match, scored 28 points and had four rebounds and nine assists, Gators coach Josh Waight said another of the Southern Peninsula players was more of a factor.
“I thought we did a good job on Matt Brasser,” Waight said.
“We forced him into tough shots and had a hand in his face, but unfortunately he made them (shots).
“But Corey Bond really hurt us with shots down the stretch.”
Sam Beks was the standout for the Gators, with 21 points, 12 rebounds and three assists.
“He did a really good job,” Waight said.
“He shot really well and hopefully he can continue that going forward.”
The Gators now have a 5-8 record through 13 matches.
While Waight was fully focused on the Gators’ clash, he would have had one eye on the ever-changing COVID-19 landscape at the weekend as he was set to fly out on Friday to coach the under-16 Vic Country side.
But Basketball Victoria has released a statement saying the Australian Junior Championships have been postponed, something Waight described as "disappointing".
“It's really disappointing for the boys as they worked really hard throughout the campaign,” he said.
“Hopefully it is only postponed and they do get to showcase their talents on the national stage.
“We had our singlet presentations yesterday hoping we would fly out on Friday.
“But to have it taken away from them for a second time is disappointing for them.”
